Recent technological advances in the last two decades have led to the development of self-expanding or expandable metallic mesh stents. These stents represent the latest technology for the treatment of malignant and benign airway obstructions. A stent can be described as a tubular prosthesis that maintains luminal patency and a predefined luminal diameter of a tubular structure by opposing radial forces to extrinsic or intramural compressive forces. Thus, a stent provides internal support for luminal patency.

Acyl halides are intermediates of the carbonylations of alkenes and organic-halides. Decarbonylation of acyl halides as a reversible process of the carbo-nylation is possible with Pd catalyst. The decarbonylation of aliphatic acid chlorides proceeds with Pd(0) catalyst, such as Pd on carbon or PdC, at around 200 °C[109,753]. The product is a mixture of isomeric internal alkenes. For example, when decanoyl chloride is heated with PdCF at 200 C in a distillation flask, rapid evolution of CO and HCl stops after I h, during which time a mixture of nonene isomers was distilled off in a high yield. The decarbonylation of phenylpropionyl chloride (883) affords styrene (53%). In addition, l,5-diphenyl-l-penten-3-one (884) is obtained as a byproduct (10%). formed by the insertion of styrene into the acyl chloride. Formation of the latter supports the formation of acylpalladium species as an intermediate of the decarbonylation. Decarbonylation of the benzoyl chloride 885 can be carried out in good yields at 360 with Pd on carbon as a catalyst, yielding the aryl chloride 886[754]. 

In order to maintain a definite contact area, soHd supports for the solvent membrane can be introduced (85). Those typically consist of hydrophobic polymeric films having pore sizes between 0.02 and 1 p.m. Figure 9c illustrates a hoUow fiber membrane where the feed solution flows around the fiber, the solvent—extractant phase is supported on the fiber wall, and the strip solution flows within the fiber. Supported membranes can also be used in conventional extraction where the supported phase is continuously fed and removed. This technique is known as dispersion-free solvent extraction (86,87). The level of research interest in membrane extraction is reflected by the fact that the 1990 International Solvent Extraction Conference (20) featured over 50 papers on this area, mainly as appHed to metals extraction. Pilot-scale studies of treatment of metal waste streams by Hquid membrane extraction have been reported (88). The developments in membrane technology have been reviewed (89). Despite the research interest and potential, membranes have yet to be appHed at an industrial production scale (90). 

Aluminum geodesic dome roof tanks are becoming popular. These are often the economic choice. They offer superior corrosion resistance for a wide range of conditions, and are clear span stmctures not requiring internal supports. They can also be built to any required diameter. However, domes caimot handle more than a few inches of water column internal or external pressure. 

The most important role of UO3 is in the production of UF4 [10049-14-6] and UF [7783-81-5], which are used in the isotopic enrichment of uranium for use in nuclear fuels (119—121). The trioxide also plays a part in the production of UO2 for fuel peUets (122). In addition to these important synthetic appHcations, microspheres of UO3 can themselves be used as nuclear fuel. Fabrication of UO3 microspheres has been accompHshed using sol-gel or internal gelation processes (19,123—125). FinaHy, UO3 is also a support for destmctive oxidation catalysts of organics (126,127).
