The phase diagram features four phase regions, three phase boundaries, and two points of particular interest the triple point (TP) and the supercritical point (CP). Values for TP and CP from The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam6 (IAPWS) are 273.16 K and 611.657 Pa (IAPWS, 2002) and 647.096 K and 22.064 MPa (IAPWS, 2002), respectively. Three of the phases (solid, liquid, and gas) are bounded by equilibrium... [Pg.12]

The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) provides internationally accepted values and formulations for the properties of light and heavy steam, water, and selected aqueous solutions for scientific and industrial applications. IAPWS Releases and Guidelines can be obtained online at http //www.iapws.org. [Pg.12]

Local application of concentrated sodium channel blockers can provide complete pain relief through nerve conduction block (local anesthetics). This approach to pain relief is limited to a few applications involving short-term treatment of acute pain, since sodium channels are also vital to conduction in the heart, CNS, skeletal muscle, and non-nociceptive sensory neurons. However, some types of chronic pain signaling appear to be sensitive to sodium channel blockers at concentrations that do not cause conduction block. In particular, neuropathic pain, defined as chronic pain resulting from a primary lesion or dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) [58], is thought to originate from aberrant signaling in the nervous system and can be ameliorated by sodium channel blockers. [Pg.131]

The difficulty with process claim protection is twofold The first is the location in which the process is being carried out, and the second is who is carrying out the process. If an inventor has a patent on a process for making an old compound and that process is practiced in one country and the product itself imported into a different country, different laws apply in different countries. The International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property recommends that the patentee should have the same rights on the imported product which is accorded him by the domestic law in the country of importation had the processes been practiced there. As a practical matter prosecution against a source outside of a country is more complicated and more costly than against a domestic infringer of a process patent. The Tariff Act offers some aid 52). [Pg.96]
