Take the initiative to meet your audience. If you do meet the admissions committee, you can fine-tune your essay to suit their specific requirements and preferences. Typically, each admissions director is in charge of a geographical area of the country, or of the world if the school draws or wants to draw international students. They travel to those areas to attend college fairs, conduct interviews, and speak at secondary schools. They are available to applicants to answer questions and provide a better idea of what the school is like (especially if they are an alumni/ae). [Pg.52]

Steven F. Watkins (Louisiana State University) provided an overview of the history of the chemistry department at LSU and how it came to be the leading producer of African American Ph.D. chemists. In 1990, the majority of students in the graduate program were international students of mostly Asian descent. Prior to 1991, only four African Americans had been awarded Ph.D. degrees in chemistry at the LSU main campus. Subsequently, the faculty made a conscious decision to recruit domestic students as well as hire an African American faculty member. [Pg.4]

Although we decreased the number of international students proportionately, we still have a very diverse population. International students now represent only 30 to 40 percent of our student body, but they come from more than 20 countries, making the chemistry department the most culturally diverse department on campus. [Pg.74]

Steven F. Watkins Out of about 30. Before they arrived we did not have any tenure-track women faculty. In fact, one of these women, who was a postdoc at National Institute of Standards and Technology and who, I am sure, worked day and night as a postdoc, mentioned to me one day that her work load had gone way up at LSU because all of the women graduate students wanted to talk to her about their problems. The central idea is that every group has to be comfortable in the academic environment. I do not know how you do it for every group. You identify and try to make provisions for women, for international students, for minority students. The white males can fend for themselves, I suppose. [Pg.80]

On April 15, 2005 more than 1500 Amnesty International student members from 10 states throughout the Northeast descended on the Indian Consulate in New York to demand action from the Indian government on Bhopal. The Association for India s Development participated in solidarity actions and events at various Indian government offices in the United States that same day. These actions indicate that Dow s inability to resolve the Bhopal issues is threatening its license to operate. [Pg.467]

Under the assumption that the residuals are independent, normally distributed with mean 0 and constant variance, when the sample size is large, standardized residuals greater than 2 are often identified as suspect observations. Since asymptotically standardized residuals are normally distributed, one might think that they are bounded by — oo and +00, but in fact, a stand-ardized residual can never exceed y/(n - p)(n - l)n-1 (Gray and Woodall, 1994). For a simple linear model with 19 observations, it is impossible for any standardized residual to exceed 4. Standardized residuals suffer from the fact that they a prone to ballooning in which extreme cases of x tend to have smaller residuals than cases of x near the centroid of the data. To account for this, a more commonly used statistic, called studentized or internally studentized residuals, was developed... [Pg.71]

Hence, raw residuals are often standardized by some quantity, usually its standard deviation, to account for the unequal variance of the residuals. If the estimate of the standard deviation is based on the observation in question the method is called internal studentization, but if the observation is not included in the estimate of the standard deviation, then the method is called external studentization. Studentized residuals can be estimated... [Pg.194]
