Interim summary

This section has given an overview of some of the experimental designs that are suitable for collecting data to estimate the coefficients of the first-order and second-order model. Many of these designs are based on factorial and fractional factorial designs. 

It is clear that if the first-order model (equation (5)) is assumed to be valid, then a resolution III design or a Plackett-Burman design can be used since this design will estimate all of the yff without bias. 

If the true model contains quadratic terms then the estimate of the intercept, Pq, of the first-order model will be biased. The lack-of-fit of the first-order model due to quadratic effects can be tested by adding center points to the design. 

To construct the central composite design to estimate the coefficients of the second-order model (equation (14)), usually a fractional factorial design of at least resolution V is used. In this case, if the model is valid, then all of the estimates of the main effect coefficients, p., and the interaction coefficients, p. are imbiased. An alternative to the central composite designs for estimating the coefficients of the second-order model are the Box-Behnken designs or the designs referenced in Section 2.2.5.

Chemical-grade methanol production amounts to 213 000 kg/h, equivalent to some 4 833 GJ/h on the basis of a higho heating value of 22 692.5 kJ g. Hence, a true process efficiency of 55.5 % can be calculated. If only the coal used for gasification were considered, the figure would be 65.6%. 

If these two figures are compared with the coal feeding rate for the LURGI dry-bottom gasifier in line one of Table 1.13 and with the total coal demand in the last line methanol efficiency), it can be seen that the ratio between the total coal demand and the gasifier coal demand is approximately 1.25, i.e. almost the same as the above ratio of 1.18. One may th fore conclude that the simplified look at methanol efficiency is accurate enough to assess different types of coal.

An interim summary of much of the research of Ya.B. and his students was given in a review by Ya.B. and A. D. Dolgov [50] which gained worldwide recognition and has become a standard reference in practically all the papers on this subject both in the USSR and abroad.

After assessing the technical literature, a summary document (Figure 5) of the biological effects data is prepared for review by CACPH Advisory Panel and TMAC. This review results in a recommendation to draft a Toxic Material Advisory report which contains an interim exposure limit in additional pertinent health and safety requirements. The draft Toxic Material Advisory report is then reviewed by independent consultants. These consultants attend a 1-2 day meeting to evaluate the document and the appropriateness of the interim exposure limit. The independency of the review meeting is assured by having one of CACPH Advisory Panel member chair the committee to ensure that the review process proceeds in an orderly manner. CACPH s staff participation at this meeting is only to provide overview on the information that is available for review.

Summary, conclusions, and overall compliance status for the given platform/network/architecture should be documented, as well as a detailed description of each area of noncompliance. For each noncomphance, the nature of the remediation as well as the associated estimated completion date should be documented. If the remediation is longer term, the interim stopgap measure that will be taken should be documented. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the person accountable for the remediation action must be documented. 

Many studies are still conducted by traditional paper-based methods. CRFs and documents are sent by post (often overnight) to the sponsor site where they are data entered and filed. Today s technology allows for the conduct at multiple sites, with the ability to pool data for interim analyses and integrated safety summaries. The size and complexity of a study should determine which technology should be employed. Most large pharmaceutical companies have a portfolio of study conduct technologies to employ.
