In addition, the authors suggest that all such systems must have a semi-permeable active boundary (membrane), an energy transduction apparatus and (at least) two types of functionally interdependent macromolecular components (catalysts and records). The relationship between environment and security is indirect and multicasual. Therefore it is difficult to assess the risk to security caused by environmental change. Taking into consideration the principle of sustainable development where the environmental, economic and social issues are interdependent and cannot be pursued separately, the integrated risk assessment is particularly useful.

Sustainable development is a fuzzy concept. As a concept, however, it meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations (Morse, 1998). From a business perspective, sustainable development is often separated into three interdependent areas economic, environmental, and social. 

In fact, providing a safe, life-sustaining environment for fish involves a variety of complex, interdependent factors. Many of these are directly related to chemistry. For example, the presence of ammonia, NH3, is one of the most common causes of death in poorly maintained fish tanks. Ammonia is produced when uneaten fish food decays. This compound dissolves readily in water. It is toxic to fish in even minute concentrations. 

I created the inclusion equation to help depict the interrelated variables necessary to create and sustain inclusive cultures (see Figure 7.1). There are two broad components of the inclusion model it depicts macro and micro inclusion practices. The two macro aspects focus on organizational culture and organizational systems. At the micro level, the model identifies individual cultural competence and emotional intelligence as the two core requirements to create and sustain inclusion. The components of the model are interdependent and work synergistically. When any one aspect is weak or absent, it severely inhibits the ability of an organization to effectively practice inclusion. 

Markets are becoming more interdependent, global, and sophisticated. Corporate social responsibility and sustainability are emerging as key requirements for doing business in a greener world. 

But what does sustainable mean for the apparel retail industry Sustainability is a word that elicits a multitude of definitions and explanations depending on your point of view and even your geographic location. The broad range of definitions for sustainability is a reflection of the fact that sustainability is incredibly complex, where interdependencies can often be hidden or misunderstood, and where just measuring sustainability can be difficult and confusing, particularly when considering ethical and social issues. 

This is a classic example of the behavior-intention gap in this gap the intention of the consumers to support a cause they passionate about is not reflected in their purchasing behavior. It has been suggested that sustainability, due to the complexity of issues, interdependence of issues, and sheer scale, may be just too complex even to enter into the normal consumer decision hierarchy (Kim and Damhorst, 1998) therefore, consumers subconsciously suspend their ethical judgments at the time of purchase. 

As individual brands these fundamental issues may seem insurmountable however, in spite of the highly competitive nature of the retail apparel market, a growing group of responsible retailers are tackling these issues together. These retailers have recognized the interdependencies of their businesses within the supply chain and how the development of a more sustainable model is beneficial to individual organizations as well as the industry as a whole. 

Sustainable development requires us to acknowledge the interdependent relations between people and the natural environment. This interdependence means that no single social, economic, political or environmental objective be pursued to the detriment of others. The environment cannot be protected in a way that leaves half of humanity in poverty. Likewise, there can be no long-term development on this depleted planet. ... 

The purpose of the Nuclear Safety Group at Rocky Flats is the prevention of an accidental, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. The Quality Plans contribute to this goal by defining specific, auditable checks and procedures which must be followed. There are three separate plans applying to different functions (a) Nuclear Materials Safety Limits (criticality limits) (b) Performance of Critical Experiments, and (c) Criticality Calculations. The three functions are, of course, related, and these interdependencies are indicated in the plans. 

Transferring the general definition on a corporate level leads to the concepts of the corporate sustainability (Zink 2014) come along with the following definition elements (e.g. Zink 2014 DylUck and Hockerts 2002) (1) Not only economic but also social and environmental prerequisites and impacts as well as the interdependencies between them have to be taken into account (2) Corporate sustainability requires a long-term business orientation as a basis for satisfying stakeholders needs now and in the future and (3) The mle to live on the income from capital, not the capital itself has to be applied for all kinds of capital financial, natural, human and social capital.
