It used to be true that material balance analytical results obtained in the field were of limited reliability, as field test methods had poorer detection limits and a lower degree of accuracy and reproducibility than those methods employed in laboratories. This is now not always the case, as more and more operators and field service personnel use colorimetric, spectrophotometric, or other sophisticated (yet easy to use) test apparatus. The fact is, however, that it is not always necessary to use particularly elaborate instrumentation for field use, and there is a risk that the equipment will perhaps be selected more for its marketing appeal to customers rather than for being the most appropriate for the circumstances.

Generally, the force required to break a tablet may be expressed in either kilograms or pounds. It is of critical importance to note that because as results will vary with the specific make and type of the test apparatus used, direct comparison of results obtained on different types of apparatuses cannot be made. Thus, the same instrument must be used consistently throughout a particular study. 

The term medical device is defined under section 2 of the Medicines Act 1981 and includes any device, instrument or apparatus (or its component parts) which is used principally in humans for a therapeutic purpose. It includes bandages and in vitro diagnostic agents. It should be noted that a number of products are defined as medicines in New Zealand which in other countries are controlled as medical devices (e.g., pregnancy test kits). 

During the course of a study a number of apparatus and materials will be utilised for various purposes. Technical equipment, instruments and apparatus will be required either directly for the generation, storage and retrieval of study data, or indirectly for the control and maintenance of suitable environmental conditions. Materials of the most varied kind, like bedding for animals, animal feed, test system containers, bags and jars for the collection of samples and specimens, spare and service parts for equipment, or protective clothing will have to be utilised in the test facilities and test sites, and these materials...

E values were determined by a rebound test performed on unnotched specimens at low impact speed (0.2-0.3 m/s) using the same instrumented pendulum apparatus. 

Automatic liquid level controls shown in Figure 4 maintain the liquid level in the sump so that the bearings are always submerged in liquid. The speed of the apparatus is indicated and recorded with an optical tachometer, frequency meter, and recorder. The test apparatus, therefore, becomes an automatic device which requires an operator only to replace periodically the liquid supply vessel and to change charts on the recording instruments. Periodic maintenance of the recording instruments makes the apparatus capable of operating continuously for months at a time. 

The PHEBUS-FP test series will be carried out in the PHEBUS reactor at Cadarache, France, beginning in 1992. The first in the series will be done with trace-irradiated fuel. Later tests will use relatively high bum-up fuel. These tests are integral in scope the test apparatus includes an in-pile, 20-rod, fuel bundle, which may be instrumented, and one control rod an upper plenum region an inconel hot leg that is maintained at 700 C an optional steam generator a cold leg that Is maintained at 150 C and a scaled containment with sump.
