Inside Pressing

Since its conception, the dynamic filter has been widely reported and further developed. Most European designs are comprised of a multistage disk arrangement (Fig. 28) with both the rotating and stationary elements covered with filter cloth, thus utilising the space inside the pressure vessel. Such filters have been found (29) to be from 5 to 25 times more productive in mass of dry cake per unit area and time than filter presses for the same moisture content of the final slurry. In some cases, the moisture content with the dynamic filter was actually lower than with a filter press. The maximum productivity was achieved with peripheral disk speeds from 2.8 to 4.5 m/s. [Pg.410]

A rack and frame press uses heavy nylon cloth positioned in a wooden frame inside a rack. A measured amount of apple or other fmit mash is added from a hopper above the frame. The mash is leveled with a hand trowel and the edges of the nylon cloth are folded over the mash to encase it and create a cheese. The frame is removed, and a second rack is placed on top of the first cheese the process is repeated until a stack of cheeses is prepared. A hydrauhc ram then appHes gradually increa sing pressure on the stack and expresses the juice. A high yield of juice (80%) is obtained and no press aid is required. Because this process is labor intensive (17), it is mostly used for small farm and pilot-plant operations. [Pg.572]

The Bucher-Guyer horizontal rotary press is a highly automated batch process machine that requires no press aid. The press consists of a horizontal hydrauhc ram inside a rotating cylinder containing many flexible rods covered with a knitted synthetic fabric. The rods have serrated surfaces to allow juice which passes through the fabric to flow to the discharge ends. Hydrauhc pressure is apphed for a preset time, the ram is retracted, and the cylinder is rotated to break up the press cake. This cycle is repeated several times before the press cake is removed from the cylinder and the press is cleaned (16). Juice yield for this horizontal rotary press is 84% with secondary water addition it is increased to 92% (15). [Pg.572]

A popular connection system consists of square metal pins, usually 0.064 cm (0.025 in.) in size, that are pressed into holes drilled in a printed circuit board. The holes are copper (qv) plated on the insides and interconnect conductors on the top and bottom faces of the board. Multilayer boards have interior circuits that may also be interconnected in this way. The pias have either a soHd shank or a deformable (compHant) cross section where the pias joia the board (Fig. 2). Separable connectors or soldedess wraps (Fig. 3) engage the ends of the pias. One end of the pia can be the contact and spring of a separable connector. [Pg.24]

Cylindrical batteries can be classified into two basic types one with a spiral structure, and one with an inside-out structure. The former consists of a thin, wound cathode and the lithium anode with a separator between them. The latter is constructed by pressing the cathode mixture into a high-density cylindrical form. Batteries with the spiral construction are suitable for high-rate drain, and those with the inside-out construction are suitable for high energy density. [Pg.35]

Although one of the most common storage batteries is called the nickel/cadmium system ( NiCad ), correctly written (-)Cd/KOH/NiO(OH)(+), cadmium is not usually applied as a metal to form a battery anode. The same can be said with regard to the silver/cadmium [(-) Cd / KOH / AgO (+)] and the MerCad battery [(-)Cd/KOH/HgO(+)]. The metallic negative in these cases may be formed starting with cadmium hydroxide, incorporated in the pore system of a sintered nickel plate or pressed upon a nickel-plated steel current collector (pocket plates), which is subsequently converted to cadmium metal by electrochemical reduction inside the cell (type AB2C2). Add wood furnish (384 g, moisture content 6.02%) to the bowl of a rotary blade paddle mixer (such as a Kitchen-Aid KSM90) and agitate at the lowest speed setting. Add Mondur 541 (7.39 g, 1.9% w/w, a polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate of 31.5% NCO, Bayer) dropwise over a 5-min period using a disposable syringe. Continue blending for an additional 10 min and then transfer the blend to an 8 x 8 x 2 -in. metal form at the bottom of which is a metal plate which fits inside. The resin-coated furnish is evenly spread inside the form and another metal plate is placed on top. All parts of the form and plates are presprayed with mold release. The completed form assembly is placed into a hydraulic press (such as a model PW-22 manufactured by Pasadena Hydraulics) with platens heated at 350°F. The furnish is then pressed between the two form plates to a thickness of j in. Press controls are used to ensure consistency of board thickness. The assembly is heated for 4 min. before demolding the cured wood panel. [Pg.257]

Two types of continuous flow solid oxide cell reactors are typically used in electrochemical promotion experiments. The single chamber reactor depicted in Fig. B.l is made of a quartz tube closed at one end. The open end of the tube is mounted on a stainless steel cap, which has provisions for the introduction of reactants and removal of products as well as for the insertion of a thermocouple and connecting wires to the electrodes of the cell. A solid electrolyte disk, with three porous electrodes deposited on it, is appropriately clamped inside the reactor. Au wires are normally used to connect the catalyst-working electrode as well as the two Au auxiliary electrodes with the external circuit. These wires are mechanically pressed onto the corresponding electrodes, using an appropriate ceramic holder. A thermocouple, inserted in a closed-end quartz tube is used to measure the temperature of the solid electrolyte pellet. [Pg.552]
