INQUIRY execution

Inquiry Execution. Search execution may be done completely interactively, completely in batch, or partly interactively with completion in batch. All modes of search have a required key search in which the appropriate search index is accessed, the requested NSC numbers are retrieved, followed by an optional iterative search. In GET, this key search involves a simple lookup of the desired NSC numbers. In FSS the hierarchical extended molecular formula (EMF) index is scanned for particular moleforms plus any ring, attachments, and number of fragments specified. In SSS the key expression is analyzed and expanded... 

Output. Based on what is requested in Query Definition, and on what a user commands during Inquiry Execution, the output of a search can be directed to an alphanumeric terminal, to a Tektronix graphics terminal if structures are needed, to CAS system printers, to a transaction file (PTFC) for the Communications Processor to produce standard chemistry cards at CAS, or to two types of disk files a temporary browsing file (RESULTS) or a permanent SAVE file which can be accessed either sequentially through GET or as a search key in SSS.

Following the Piper Alpha incident in the North Sea in 1988, and the recommendations of an inquiry held by Lord Cullen, an offehore hydrocarbon release database has been set up in the UK by the Offshore Safety Division of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Reports are mandatory and, as a result, this database represents an accurate picture. Most offshore installations include gas turbines and the database thus records incidents relating to them. Data from 5.5 years of operation has been analyzed, showing that there were 85 incidents within this period associated with fuel at gas turbines in general. Of these, 52 were ignitions and 4 resulted in explosions. One incident in particular was classified as of major potential. 

Searching the File. The search programs are divided functionally into two sections definition and execution. The general philosophy is that all queries are defined on-line through interactive programs specifying search keys, optional Iterative qualifications, and output statements and then stored. Ihese questions can then be executed either on-line or in batch mode, with outputs being directed to the terminal, to system printers on the mainframe, or to two types of disk files (RESULTS and SAVE files) which can be accessed further by Inquiry.
