Technical malathion (-95% pure) contains several impurities. Of the impurities isolated, four compounds have been shown to be important in insecticide toxicology (Figure 4.5). Umetsu et al. (1977) demonstrated that all of these impurities potentiated the toxicity of purified malathion in rats, with compounds C and D being more active. Further studies showed that these impurities inhibited serum malathion carboxylesterase and liver malathion carboxylesterase in vitro and in vivo in rats (Talcott et al., 1979), which would explain the potentiating activity observed with these impurities because these carboxylesterases... 

Of 24 children with rheumatic fever, 6, or 25%, had total serum acid phosphatase activities above 6.5 K.A. units or the mean normal value, 4.63 K.A. units plus 2 standard deviations. In 2 of 9 infants with rickets, the total serum acid phosphatase activity was abnormally high, 11.3 and 9.7 K.A. units. High values were also obtained in occasional cases of nephrosis, pneumonia, and hepatitis. Of 23 children with rheumatic fever in which tartrate-inhibited serum acid phosphatase activity was determined, 12 had values above 0.77 K.A. unit, or the mean value, 0.21 K.A. unit plus two standard deviations.

In rats provided with drinking water containing 1% valerian tincture (estimated dose 200-250 mg/kg daily) for 12 weeks with intramuscular injection of haloperidol (equivalent to 1 mg/kg daily), an increase in lipid peroxidation levels and dichlorofluorescein-reactive species production was observed in the hepatic tissue. In the liver and kidneys, 8-aminolevulinate dehydratase activity was inhibited. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was elevated, as compared to controls, while aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were unchanged (Dalla Corte et al. 2008).
