Pomegranate juice

Like most events in New York now, the party boasted its own specialty cocktail. It was a Cosmic Cocktail, which is a cosmopolitan with pomegranate juice. Pomegranate was die it fruit juice of 2003, mostly due to the promotional efforts of a California pomegranate producer who introduced POM Wonderful, a bottled juice, nationally in 2003. A pomegranate martini developed by Dale DeGroff, die ex—Rainbow Room bartender and the King of Cocktails, was the official cocktail of the 2004 Academy Awards Governor s Ball. [Pg.211]

Pomegranates contain polyphenols that are potent antioxidants with three times the antioxidant effect of red wine or green tea. The effect of these chemicals may provide protection against heart disease and cancer (see Chapter 31). The juice of wild pomegranates yields citric acid and sodium citrate for pharmaceutical purposes. Pomegranate juice is used for treating dyspepsia and is considered beneficial in leprosy. [Pg.507]

Figure 8.1 Therapeutic effect of pomegranate juice on atherosclerotic lesion area in E° mice (A-C) or in patients with carotid artery stenosis (D and E). Thirty E° mice and 10 patients with severe CAS were supplemented with PJ concentrate (12.5 pL/mouse/day and 50 mL/day, respectively) for 9 weeks or for 1 year, respectively. Photomicrographs of typical foam cells from unsupplemented 4-month-old E° mice and from 6-month-old E° mice administered a placebo (B) or PJ (C) are presented. Mean ( SEM) effect of PJ consumption on human common carotid artery IMT (D) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) (E) are shown. = p < 0.01 (after vs. before PJ consumption). Pomegranate juice was shown to possess an antioxidant activity that was three times higher than the antioxidant activity of green tea.19 The antioxidant activity was higher in juice extracted from whole pomegranate than in juice obtained from arils only, suggesting that the processing extracts some of the hydrolyzable tannins present in the fruit rind into the juice. [Pg.139]

Figure 8.2 Pomegranate juice polyphenols and antioxidant potency in comparison to other fruit juices. Total polyphenol concentration in the different juices was determined using quercetin as a standard. LDL (100 pg of protein/milliliter) was preincubated with increasing volume concentration (0-25 pL) of the juices. Then, 5 pmol/L of CuS04 was added, and the LDL was further incubated for 2 hours at 37°C. The extent of LDL oxidation was measured by the thiobar-bituric acid reactive substance (TBAR) assay, and the ICh, values (the concentration needed to get 50% inhibition) are given. Results are given as mean S.D. of three different experiments. Figure 8.2 Pomegranate juice polyphenols and antioxidant potency in comparison to other fruit juices.
