At a recent continuing-education seminar, Dr. Hamilton and her staff pharmacists learned of the potential for a significant interaction between the two medications in question. She was puzzled as to why one of the pharmacists would have told a physician that there are no drug interaction problems with the new drug. Dr. Hamilton and the staff pharmacists are aware that the hospital information technology department has not yet updated the pharmacy department computer system to include this interaction. As she concludes her conversation with Dr. Brown, she promises to find out what happened and take corrective action. [Pg.516]

Both Microsoft and Google are providing schools with free e-mail for their students, as well as online communications, applications, and storage. Many schools are using the cloud-based networks because they have a low cost and require only limited personnel while providing a service to the school. There are risks associated with the movement to cloud-based e-mail systems. Although it is easy to monitor servers when they are run by internal data centers and are completely under the control of the school s information technology department, it is more difficult when you have little control over servers that are located somewhere in the cloud. Therefore, it is important to measure and analyze not only the performance but also the safety and security of hosted information. It is very important that students understand this and know how to respond to risks. [Pg.62]

An implementation group was established to implement the recommendations, which were all accepted in principle. A key recommendation is to pubhsh the Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits electronically to enable monthly listing updates. This will require significant upgrading of the department s information technology systems. It will take some time to fully implement all the recommendations. [Pg.675]

One problem with the use of e-mail is its potential lack of security. Employers legally own the e-mail that is delivered to their systems for use by employees. Many information technology (IT) departments routinely monitor e-mail traffic that could contain confidential information. If a pharmacist were to e-mail a patient at work to inform him or her that a refill medication was due, that patients confidentiality could be compromised. Alternatively, if patients were told that new information is posted on their pharmacy s Web page, a browser would give them access to their confidential information behind a secure firewall, which could protect that information from unauthorized access. [Pg.90]

About the Author Dr. Mosavin is Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science at Loma Linda University s School of Pharmacy.
