Information, internal flow management

The need for metrics is particularly important in process safety, in no small measure because the hazards may not be readily evident. Unlike some other safety risks where dangerous situations are more apparent—such as unsafe scaffolding, unsecured cables, trenches, and other excavations—information on the status and safety of hazardous containment systems (e.g., internal corrosion, an improperly sized relief valve) is not generally visible. Without a constant and reliable flow of information on process safety performance and management systems, leaders may, in essence, be flying blind. 

Established pharmaceutical firms do fired almost all of their investment needs, not just R D, with internal cash flows from current operations (285). Internal funds may carry a lower cost of capital for complex investments like R D, because outside investors are at a disadvantage in being able to assess the potential returns on R D projects and will therefore demand a higher expected return on their money to cover the risk of being misled by company managers (170,189). The more complex the R D, the more these information disparities are likely to raise the cost of external sources of capital. 

Improving your inventory flow internally will not benefit your firm, if it is not improved throughout the rest of the supply chain. The market for supply chain management software is growing rapidly. Many companies which offered only enterprise resource planning systems a few years ago, now offer web-based supply chain management software. This software allows suppliers and customers to communicate easily with each other. Information can easily be shared between computers, so that every member in the supply chain is communicating with the other members. 

Collaboration CGR Management Consultants defines it as joint planning and execution of supply chain activities. These activities can range from new product development to day-to-day operations. Collaboration includes all aspects of the relationship related to physical movement, information sharing, financial flows, and exchange of intellectual property. Collaboration is also defined as internal between people and functions and external between supply chain companies. The Supply-Chain Council defines collaboration as A relationship built on trust that is benchmarked by the commitment to the team objective and where consensus may not always be achievable but where nothing takes place without the commitment of all involved. ... 

Supply chains remain a hot topic. Since the first edition of the Handbook, eyes are wide open to a global view of end-to-end material, information, and financial flows. This applies to companies large and small, their employees, and their managers. By now, most realize that few are secure from the heat of global competitors. The quality of the responses to these competitors is mixed. In particular, mastery of internal processes is not enough. One must be mindful of the concerns of supplier and channel partners. This has driven maturation of the discipline we call supply chain management, or SCM for short. 

I plan to study how personal information management strategies evolve over an extended period of time and the impact that changes in life patterns have in these practices. Overall, we are interested in exploring which internal and external factors change the equilibrium of the personal information ecosystem. The ecosystem evolves with new processes, new interdependencies between components, and new flow amongst components.
