Many companies which offered only enterprise resource planning systems a few years ago, now offer web-based supply chain management software. This software allows suppliers and customers to communicate easily with each other. Information can easily be shared between computers, so that every member in the supply chain is communicating with the other members. 

An enterprise resources planning system is a set of software modules that provides a company with the capability of automating the transactions involved with its business processes. The ERP system provides a common database and establishes uniform policies and practices across the entire enterprise. This allows real-time access to the data. An ERP system is an outgrowth of the traditional manufacturing software systems such as Material Requirements Planning Systems (MRPII). The traditional systems focused on planning and optimization of these plans. The ERP system expanded beyond these to serve additional functions in the firm.

Enterprise software is the basis of our major business processes. If we consider procure to pay or order to cash, we might think of purchasing, order entry, inventory control. E-commerce, and a host of other application systems that make the process efficient, effective, and economic. We can marvel at the integration that ties these pieces of software together and we call the whole interwoven bundle our enterprise resource planning system, or ERP. 

Technical enterprise applications may be PDM systems, Enterprise Resource Planning System, Maintenance, Repair and Operations systems. Virtual Product Manager systems, etc. 

Enterprise Resource Planning systems are relatively new and are associated with the development of IT and Internet applications. The basic idea of ERP systems is that they provide management information systems that reduce the data rich information poor situation often found in companies due to the proliferation of IT systems that cannot speak to one another effectively. One of the most common applications is SAP, although there are many others including those offered by Oracle and Microsoft etc. 

These have played an important role as enablers of various functions, as well as decision-making tools in the product life cycle. This is particularly true in the case of enterprise resource planning systems that firms have been using successfully to integrate actions and policies across functions and entities in an enterprise. The problem, however, arises whenever newer functions are introduced into the enterprise, especially when various parts or entities of the system are either not ready or incapable of integration due to various reasons, primarily lack of technological capabilities.
