Most passport photographs generated in the United States are instant color prints. Robert A.W. Johnstone, Ph.D., is a full professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, U.K. He possesses a D.Sc., a Ph.D., and a B.Sc. in chemistry. He is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). An author and contributor to several books. Dr. Johnstone has published over 200 journal papers in natural product chemistry, catalysis in oxidation and reduction, and spectroscopy. His work has resulted in several new synthetic procedures in organic chemistry that are widely used and have provided some 30 full patents. Part of his research with industry led to a Queen s Award for Technological Achievement, an award not usually given to industrial and business enterprises and not normally given to university staff. The award concerned large-scale manufacture of an important ingredient of timber preservative by a new catalytic method, which produces about 30001 per annum of the product. OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U. S. Department of Labor Federal agency with safety and health regulatory and enforcement authorities for most U.S. industry and business. 

In fact, industry and business clearly have taken the initiative in proposing, perfecting, and, in some cases, implementing new kinds of partnerships with universities and their science faculties. The Impetus for these developments comes in part from the long decline in Federal funding for basic investigations, and in substantial measure from industrial Interest in the economic potential of discoveries in several rapidly surging areas of academic research. 

As the number of power-producing fuel cells increases, a need for trained technicians in each of these areas will develop. The Texas Department of Economic Development has estimated that 453 jobs, with an average wage of 33,275, win be created for every 20 megawatts of installed base. Approximately 200 of these jobs will be "direct" employees. The extent of emplo)onent opportunities will, thus, be directly proportional to the number of units installed. (Direct employees are those that work directly on fuel cells indirect employees are those that work in related industries and businesses in local economies where fuel cell companies and employees spend their earnings.) ... 

Several companies, from different industries and business segments in Brazil, had already started implementation of S OP process and concepts, as described by ILOS institute (BLOS Institute 2009) in Fig. 4.12. 

Cooper et al. (2004) performed a benchmark study to identify best practices in new product development with 105 companies from different industries and business segments, and one of the key findings were the importance of senior management support and commitment to develop a iimovative culture inside the organization (79% of best performers have this practices implemented in their organizations), and also 65% provide strong support and empowerment to the team members, as detailed in the Fig. 4.33. 

To test the validity of published accident ratios and triangles, I did the research resulting in the publication of a paper titled Injury Ratios. The most important conclusion drawn from that research is that variations on the inherent risk levels in industries and businesses—as indicated by the substantial differences in OSHA incidence recordable rates and the percent of incidents that result in lost workday cases—are so great that it is impossible to develop meaningful injury ratios which are universally applicable. 

Musculoskeletal injuries, ergonomically related, are a large segment of the spectrum of injuries and illnesses in all industries and businesses. Since they are costly, reducing their frequency and severity will yield notable results. Furthermore, it is well established that successful ergonomics applications result not only in risk reduction, but also in improved productivity, lower costs, and waste reduction. 

Certainly, enormous challenges remain. Generations of new scientists must be taught that it is important to consider the environmental impact of any new methods that are introduced. Industry and business leaders must learn to appreciate...
