Ergonomics applications

Ergonomics developed out of the need to make work less stressful and more comfortable. And these are laudable goals that can be more effectively achieved if managements understand that the application of ergonomics principles also serves their productivity and cost efficiency goals. Case histories are now prevalent describing ergonomics applications that were initiated to resolve injury and illness problems and also achieved improvements in productivity and cost efficiency.

Musculoskeletal injuries, ergonomically related, are a large segment of the spectrum of injuries and illnesses in all industries and businesses. Since they are costly, reducing their frequency and severity will yield notable results. Furthermore, it is well established that successful ergonomics applications result not only in risk reduction, but also in improved productivity, lower costs, and waste reduction.

Because of lessons learned through ergonomics applications, this author prefers this definition of ergonomics ... 

Efficient material movement is essential in lean concepts and ergonomics applications can reduce the cost of the process by eliminating unnecessary motions and reducing risks. 

This author s experience supports the premise that what proves to be a sound ergonomics application in one situation may not produce similar results in another workplace. For example, if a work population adopted the position that the workplace is to be absolutely risk free— an unattainable goal— that could be a deterrent factor. 

Furthermore, it was noticed that all of the professional cyclists evaluated in this study, presented inaccuracies in the seat adjustment, demonstrating the ignorance between the ergonomics for the correct adequacy for the men-bicycle system. This ergonomic application, besides to increase the security, the satisfaction and the welfare of the cyclists, also looks for reaching a better yield in the pedaling.
