Apart from classical organochlorines, not much literature is available on the occurrence of other PTS compounds like butyltins, polybromin-ated diphenyl ethers, etc. in Indian human breast milk. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in their news bulletin of the year 2004 has indicated that they could detect PCDDs and PCDFs in the human milk samples collected from Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat cities (http //icmr.nic.in). They have found that the TEQs of dioxins and related compounds in their samples ranged from about 2 to 16 pg g 1 lipid weight of human milk. [Pg.469]

The government encourages measurement of the pesticide and other chemical contamination of soil, water and food that has been a much-researched subject in India since the 1970s. Several national and international agencies carry out regular research on toxic chemicals, especially on pesticides in India. In 1986, The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) began a project on surveillance of food contaminants in India and found that 51% of the food items tested were contaminated with various pesticides and 20% of them had pesticide levels above the... [Pg.473]

A cancer registry was initiated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 1986. However, no conclusive evidence of an increase in cancer in the exposed population has been documented. Dikshit and Kanhere (1999) analyzed the incidence of cancer in gas-exposed males during1987-1992 but found no significant increase in cancer. On the other hand, these researchers (Dikshit and Kanhere, 1999) predicted that a true estimate of any increase in the incidence of cancer can only be made 15-20 years after the accident, but no such study has since been pubhshed. [Pg.304]

Whether or not hydrogen cyanide (HCN) was the cause of death following the disaster in Bhopal and whether or not people should be treated with sodium thiosulfate (NTS) became a controversial issue, involving the medical profession, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),... [Pg.79]

Soon after the Bhopal accident, the government of India promised to conduct a comprehensive study on the acute and long-term effects of exposme to MIC. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) released approximately 2 million for research a cohort of 80,021 gas-exposed people and 15,931 controls were registered, but only 16,8 exposed subjects and 5,741 controls could be contacted in 2010 (Sharma, 2013). Researchers were not recruited to study all aspects of toxicity. No definite criteria were set to make a quantitative assessment of the exposure to MIC the best estimate has remained the distance from the Union Carbide factory (Dhara et al., 2002). A number of laboratories in the United States and United Kingdom initiated research on MIC (Environmental Health Perspective, 1987), but their interest faded quickly. The twentieth anniversary of the disaster drew the attention of the media, but not of researchers. [Pg.287]
