Monetite forms white triclinic (1) crystals with refractive indexes 1.63, 1.61, 1.60.3f At red heat it is dehydrated to calcium pyrophosphate.

Oxidative degradation appears to be the main mechanism governing humification. In determining the degree of decomposition or humification of peat materials the estimation of total fiber content correlates well with relative biodegradability and is a more reliable method than either the pyrophosphate index or bulk density values. 

Pyrophosphate Index. An index of the degree of humification of organic matter as measured by the determination of the absorbance of the pyrophosphate extract using a colorimeter.

Nutritional status assessment for thiamine is generally carried out by assaying the total thiamine in whole blood or erythrocytes, or by measuring the activity of erythrocyte transketolase before and after incubation with exogenous thiamine pyrophosphate. The latter serves as the sensitive index of thiamine nutritional status (Brin 1980). In addition to the enzymatic test, a measure of urinary thiamine in relation to dietary intake has been the basis for balance studies to assess the adequacy of intake. When thiamine excretion is low, a larger portion of the test dose is retained, indicating a tissue s need for thiamine. A high excretion indicates tissue saturation. In the deficient state, excretion drops to zero. Plasma pyruvate and lactate concentrations have also been used to assess thiamine status. 

Zinc phosphate, also known as zinc pyrophosphate, is a white compound with composition Zn2P307 that occurs naturally as the mineral hopeite, although this is rare Merck Index, 1996). Zinc phosphate may be produced by heating a soluble zinc salt with ammonium phosphate. It is listed in the Colour Index (1971) as Cl 77965, where it is reported to be used in the US as a white pigment. A related hydrous compoimd zinc phosphate hydrate, Zn3(P04)2.4H20, also exists, which is Usted in the Colour Index as Cl 77964.
