Clarity of Graft Polymers with Varying Methyl Methacrylate/ Styrene Ratios. Refractive index considerations 7,8) and general state of the art considerations (8) favor methyl methacrylate (MMA) over styrene (St) as the major monomer portion of the matrix. With this in mind, we selected MMA/St ratios from 62/38 to 80/20 (wt %). Using a commercial Firestone butadiene latex (2004) to supply the 15% rubber graft, polymerization runs were made as outlined in Table I. [Pg.270]

Polyesters are soluble in such organic vehicles as chloroform, dichlorethane, tetrachloroethane, tetrahydrofuran and others. Synthesized copolysulfonarilats have stable indices of inductive capacity in the interval of temperatures 20-200 °C and sufficiently persistent in deluted and concentrated solutions H2S04, HC1, NaOH. The characteristics of these indexes considerably improve for heat-treated blockcopolymers, which is of no small importance for membranous materials. [Pg.221]

It should be noted that interference fringes are ordinarily not seen when a cell is filled with liquid because the refractive index of most liquids approaches that of the window material and reflection is minimized (Hqua-lion 6-1.5). On the other hand, interference can Ise observed between 28(K) and 2(KI0 cm in Figure 16-1, I fere, the sample is a sheet of polystyrene, w iich has a retractive index considerably different from that of air. For this reason, significant rcdeclion occurs at the two interfaces of the sheet. F.qualion 17-2 is often used to calculate the thickness of thin polymer films. [Pg.459]

The basic condition of the Standard application - the availability of stable coupled probabilistic or the multiple probabilistic relations between then controlled quality indexes and magnetic characteristics of steel. All the probabilistic estimates, used in the Standard, are applied at confidence level not less than 0,95. General requirements to the means of control and procedure of its performance are also stipulated. Engineers of standard development endeavoured take into consideration the existed practice of technical control performance and test at the enterprises that is why the preparation of object control for the performance of nondestructive test can be done during the process of ordinary acceptance test. It is suggested that every enterprise is operated in correspondence with direct and non-destructive tests, obtained exactly at it, for detailed process chart and definite product type, however the tests have long since been performed after development of the Standard displayed that process gives way to unification. [Pg.25]

Next, we shall consider how the nuclear kinetic energy is taken into consideration perturbatively. The natural perturbation index k is chosen to be... [Pg.403]

Note 3. If after 15 min the refractive index has not increased considerably, 2 g of tert.-butylalcohol should be added. This may activate the base. [Pg.92]

The factor 1 - p/p2 cannot be too close to zero, nor can the refractive index of the polymer and the solvent be too similar. These additional considerations limit the choice of solvents for a synthetic polymer, while their values are optimal for aqueous protein solutions. [Pg.641]

The refractive index of CCI4 at 20°C and 589 nm, the D line of the sodium spectrum, is 1.4607. At this temperature the density of this compound is 1.59 g cm . Use this information to calculate a for CCI4. Criticize or defend the following proposition The prediction that = f(R/X) may have been premature. The consideration of Eq. (10.3) which led to this conclusion could just as well predict = f(a /X). [Pg.669]

Internal redection starts by consideration of an interface between two media, a denser transparent medium with refractive index n, and a rarer medium with a complex refractive index (= where is the absorption coefficient of the medium) as shown in Figure 23. If of the rarer... [Pg.286]

Artificial surfaces must be resistant to cigarette bums, vandaUsm, and other harm. Fire resistance is most critically evaluated by the NBS flooring radiant panel test (10). In this test, a gas-fired panel maintains a heat flux, impinging on the sample to be tested, between 1.1 W/cm at one end and 0.1 W/cm at the other. The result of the bum is reported as the flux needed to sustain flame propagation in the sample. Higher values denote greater resistance to burning results depend on material and surface constmction. Polypropylene turf materials are characterized by critical radiant flux indexes which are considerably lower than those for nylon and acryflc polymers (qv) (11). [Pg.534]

The Separation Stage. A fundamental quantity, a, exists in all stochastic separation processes, and is an index of the steady-state separation that can be attained in an element of the process equipment. The numerical value of a is developed for each process under consideration in the subsequent sections. The separation stage, which in a continuous separation process is called the transfer unit or equivalent theoretical plate, may be considered as a device separating a feed stream, or streams, into two product streams, often called heads and tails, or product and waste, such that the concentrations of the components in the two effluent streams are related by the quantity, d. For the case of the separation of a binary mixture this relationship is... [Pg.76]

The calculation of localization energies in heteroaromatic systems derived from alternant hydrocarbons has been simplified by Dewar and Maitlis (57JCS2521). This approach has had considerable success the results provide a somewhat empirical index of reactivity. [Pg.7]

Cost Indices The value of money will change because of inflation and deflation. Hence cost data can be accurate only at the time when they are obtained and soon go out of date. Data from cost records of equipment and projects purchased in the past may be converted to present-day values by means of a cost index. The present cost of the item is found by multiplying the historical cost by the ratio of the present cost index divided oy the index applicable at the previous date. Ideally each cost item affected by inflation should be forecast separately. Labor costs, construction costs, raw-materials and energy prices, and product prices all change at different rates. Composite indices are derived by adding weighted fractions of the component indices. Most cost indices represent national averages, and local values may differ considerably. [Pg.861]

Contrac tors bids offer the most rehable information on cost. Order-of-magnitude costs, however, may be required for preliminary studies. One way of estimating them is to obtain cost information from similar facihties and scale it to the proposed installation. Costs of steel storage tanks and vessels have been found to vaiy approximately as the 0.6 to 0.7 power of their weight [see Happel, Chemical Process Economics, Wiley, 1958, p. 267 also Williams, Chem. Eng., 54(12), 124 (1947)]. AU estimates cased on the costs of existing eqiiipment must be corrected for changes in the price index from the date when the equipment was built. Considerable uncertainty is involved in adjusting data more than a few years old. [Pg.1020]
