INDEX applications

Cost Indices The value of money will change because of inflation and deflation. Hence cost data can be accurate only at the time when they are obtained and soon go out of date. Data from cost records of equipment and projects purchased in the past may be converted to present-day values by means of a cost index. The present cost of the item is found by multiplying the historical cost by the ratio of the present cost index divided oy the index applicable at the previous date. Ideally each cost item affected by inflation should be forecast separately. Labor costs, construction costs, raw-materials and energy prices, and product prices all change at different rates. Composite indices are derived by adding weighted fractions of the component indices. Most cost indices represent national averages, and local values may differ considerably. 

The Colour Index assigns Cl generic names to commercial dyes. This Cl name is defined as a classification name and serial number which when allocated lo a commercial product allows that product to be uniquely Identified within any Colour Index Application Class." This enables the particular commercial products to be classified along with other products whose essential colorant has the same chemical constitution.

An important application of this type of analysis is in the determination of the calculated cetane index. The procedure is as follows the cetane number is measured using the standard CFR engine method for a large number of gas oil samples covering a wide range of chemical compositions. It was shown that this measured number is a linear combination of chemical family concentrations as determined by the D 2425 method. An example of the correlation obtained is given in Figure 3.3. 

A similar form of indicator is the Profitability Index (PI), where the denominator is the maximum exposure of the project, and is applicable where the company is sensitive to the maximum exposure e.g.

In general, the first step in virtual screening is the filtering by the application of Lipinski s Rule of Five [20]. Lipinski s work was based on the results of profiling the calculated physical property data in a set of 2245 compounds chosen from the World Drug Index.
