The lack of a robust set of economic metrics to value hydrogen is another barrier that was mentioned. The measures used to value hydrogen (and other forms of energy) are rooted in a petroleum-based economy that does not necessarily reflect the actual costs of energy. The decisions that will lead to the incorporation of hydrogen into the energy mix will likely derive from dealing with security and environmental issues, none of which are adequately valued today. [Pg.36]

Another important issue deals with antimicrobial food packaging, as detailed in Chapter 10. Antimicrobial packaging systems based on PLA would be superior to other antimicrobial materials due to its comparable cost, effective antimicrobial activity, few regulatory concerns and environmental friendliness. For example, the incorporation of bacteriocins into PLA matrices could provide a delivery system to improve their efficiency in food applications, e.g. PLA/nisin films show this behaviour and they have been proposed for commercial use. Actually, the PLA/nisin polymers can be used in bottle manufacturing or coated onto the bottle surface for use in liquid food packaging, as well as into films or coated on the surface of films for use in solid food packaging. [Pg.328]

The possible advent of large-scale growth in battery-powered vehicle deployment provides a unique opportunity to delve into the battery supply chain and examine it for any environmental issues or other roadblocks pertaining to material scarcity that may arise as barriers. One key concern is that batteries incorporate materials whose production may incur adverse environmental impacts and consume large amoimts of energy. Additionally, if demand for these materials (especially lithium or cobalt) for batteries outpaces supply, scarcity may become an issue and impact the price and feasibility of large-scale adoption of battery-powered vehicles. [Pg.484]

The third part. Developmental Psychopathology, delves into detailed disease-specific overviews. Each of the chapters covers issues pertaining to nosology and classification, to genetic determinants, brain systems implicated, environmental influences, and nature-nurture interactions. Neurotransmission and neuromodulation, and hormonal and other developmental influences are addressed and, whenever available, relevant animal models are incorporated into the discussion. The interplay of normative and derailed development is a core concept for these chapters. Of the part s 12 chapters, 9 are devoted to traditionally defined disease categories, and 3 cover the overarching areas of early-life stress, aggression, and affiliative behaviors. [Pg.813]

It is helpful to make clear some principles and assumptions that continue throughout the rest of this chapter. We first examine the different types of standards that are used (typological issues) and their role in environmental regulation. We then outline a framework for deriving a new standard that attempts to incorporate social and economic factors into our decision making. [Pg.6]
