Washing tests for these trials were made in a flood-type washer with one wash and one rinse chamber. The results presented in Tables III and IV suggest that parathion residues (from wettable powders) are not readily removed with the materials and equipment employed support is thus secured for the authors contention that with many substrates parathion residues are actually subsurface and exist in situ in close association with the oily and waxy constituents of the plants. 

The women were randomized to receive either tamoxifen (6681) or placebo (6707) for 5 years. However, the trial was stopped prematurely because the findings provided strong evidence of a reduction in breast cancer with tamoxifen therapy. The results have been released and made available at http //cancertrials.nci.nih.gov. These are the first available data supporting the hypothesis that breast cancer can be pharmacologically prevented in an at-risk female population. The administration of tamoxifen was effective in reducing by 69% the annual rate of ER(+) tumors, both invasive and in situ, but was ineffective in reducing the occurrence of ER(-) neoplasias (Young 1999).

The use of phosphate has been widely evaluated and subjected to field trials for Pb-contaminated soils. Most treatment systems involve excavation, pug milling of the soil with the stabilization agent, and either replacement or landfill disposal. Occasionally, for larger sites and deeper contamination, in situ mixing with large augers is used. 

In all experiments, we start with an in situ compensation of the residual spectral phase of the IR pump pulse, introduced by dispersive elements in the pump beamline. By this means, we make sure to have BWL pulses in the experiment if the zero phase is applied to the SLM. The residual phase is found by adaptive optimization of the total photoelectron yield from multiphoton ionization of ground state Xe atoms, which are led effusively into the interaction region. Non-stoichiometry, which originates from various kinds of lattice defect, can be derived from the phase rule. As an introduction, let us consider a trial experiment to understand non-stoichiometry (this experiment is, in principle, analogous to the one described in Section 1.4.8). Figure 1.1 shows a reaction vessel equipped with a vacuum pump, pressure gauge for oxygen gas, pressure controller for oxygen gas, thermometer, and chemical balance. The temperature of the vessel is controlled by an outer-furnace and the vessel has a special window for in-situ X-ray diffraction. A quantity of metal powder... 

Peracetic acid is a milder oxidising agent and is prepared in situ. The iodination reaction is performed in 98% acetic acid and upon the addition of 30% hydrogenperoxide, peracetic acid is generated. No general rules for the selection of the oxidising agent are available, it is often a matter of trial and error. 

Figure 20 shows the tracer particle coordinates over a few seconds for this bed. The y coordinate in this case indicates height and the three shaded strips indicate the upper, middle and lower parts of the bed that are in the field of view. The x coordinate indicates which semi-cylindrical half of the bed the tracer is in. In general, particles were found to move up and down on each side of the central baffle, with occasional movement between semi-cylindrical sections, either under the baffle within the dense bed or over the baffle within the freeboard space. This trial demonstrated (a) the potential for PEPT to be used in situ in an industrial environment and (b) the practicality of the configurable layout.
