Additional tests were made to help evaluate Mr. Veere s degree of malnutrition and his progress toward recovery. His arm circumference and triceps skinfold were measured, and his mid upper arm muscle circumference was calculated (see Chap. 2, Anthropometric Measurements). His serum transferrin, as well as his serum albumin, were measured. Fasting blood glucose and serum ketone body concentration were determined on blood samples drawn the next day before breakfast. A 24-hour urine specimen was collected to determine ketone body excretion and creatinine excretion for calculation of the creatinine-height index, a measure of protein depletion from skeletal muscle. 

Percy Veere has several indicators of his protein malnntrition his serum albumin and transferrin levels are below normal, his mid-npper-arm mnscle circumference (MUAMC) is at the 12th percentile, and his creatinine-height index (CHI) was at 85%. The low levels of semm proteins reflect a low dietary protein intake, and possibly diminished capacity to absorb dietary amino acids. Consequently, amino acids are being mobilized from degradation of protein in mnscle and other tissues to supply precursors for new protein synthesis as well as glnconeogenesis. The result is a loss of muscle mass, indicated by the MUAMC and the CHI, and decreased levels of serum proteins.

The luminometer index (ASTM D 1740) is a characteristic that is becoming less frequently used. It is determined using the standard lamp mentioned above, except that the lamp is equipped with thermocouples allowing measurement of temperatures corresponding to different flame heights, and a photo-electric cell to evaluate the luminosity. The jet fuel under test is compared to two pure hydrocarbons tetraline and iso-octane to which are attributed the indices 0 and 100, respectively. The values often observed in commercial products usually vary between 40 and 70 the official specification is around 45 for TRO.

The drop shatter test indicates the resistance of a coal or coke to breakage on impact (see D440). A sample is dropped in a standard way a number of times from a specified height. Eor the tumbler test or abrasion index (ASTM D441), the coal or coke is rotated in a dmm to determine the resistance to breakage by abrasion (18). 

In design practice, a less rigorous parameter, HETP, is used as an index of packing efficiency. Tne HETP is the height of packed bed required to achieve a theoretical stage. The terms Hoe and HETP may be related under certain conditions ... 

Where a process is producing a characteristic with a capability index greater than 2.5 it should be noted that the unnecessary precision may be expensive. Figure 2 shows process capability in terms of the tolerance on a component. The area under each distribution is equal to unity representing the total probability, hence the varying heights and widths.
