Because of its short history, the concept of risk communication is still evolving. In its landmark report in 1989, Improving Risk Communication, a National Academy of Sciences panel defined risk communication in part as An interactive process of exchange of information and opinion among individuals, groups and institutions. However, this definition describes one group s consensus as to what risk conununication ought to be and does not reflect either the diversity of opinion on this topic or the reality of risk communication as it is currently practised. [Pg.2322]

Labour relations will benefit from improving risk communications and the development of a better nnderstanding of self-regnlation. These are the goals both employer and employees shonld work towards. [Pg.54]

The state provides to industry a harmonised framework for determining, evaluating and communicating risks in the European market (REACH). This also includes a form of standardisation for procedures, responsibilities and time frames in the chain, and options for state sanctions. This increases the market potential and innovation incentives for demonstrably application-safe chemical products. At the same time the basis is created for efficiency gains by employing universal IT solutions in the European market. However, the required framework also means that implementation is left to the industry and the market in many areas in order to leave enough scope for diversified solutions that are specific to the different supply chains. Simply the announcement of the REACH system has improved vertical communication in the supply chains and supported the consolidation of substance and application knowledge. [Pg.135]

Strong Public Health Protection Information on pharmaceutical development studies in new drug applications is generally limited and varies from application to application. This creates an uncertain environment and curtails FDA reviewers ability to make risk-based decisions and inhibits their ability to recognize and assess how quality was built in. Risk communication between review and inspection staff is also inhibited. Appropriate pharmaceutical development information can improve public health by improving FDA s risk-based decisions and by facilitating continuous improvement. [Pg.509]

Necessary risk studies should be completed as quickly as possible. Before the HRA is completed, the Army should work with the Pueblo stakeholders to decide how the risk of a modified baseline process facility compares with that of a baseline incineration system facility. This will require that the Army increase and improve its communications with stakeholders. Finally, the Army should make safety the number one objective in the construction, systemization, operation, and closure of the Pueblo Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. [Pg.22]

For example, the Franco-American company Rhodia notes that REACH has reinforced its efforts in developing product stewardship programmes and reviewing SDS [526]. Similarly, the Swedish Chemical and Plastic Industry Federation has responded to REACH by launching a major initiative to improve SDS information supplied by its companies [527]. From the other end of the risk communication chain, the Dutch-American company Rohm and Haas has responded with a scheme for collecting data on the chemical contents of its upstream raw materials [528]. [Pg.286]

Managers also need to improve their communications with the public on matters of risk. For reasons we reviewed in the preceding chapter, public understanding of risk information is generally poor and the public s perceptions do not match the judgments of experts. The effective manager needs to appreciate these matters and keep them firmly in mind when planning to explain decisions to the public. [Pg.270]
