Importance of standardization

In this chapter, the purity and management of pharmaceutical chemicals, would be discussed briefly so as to take adequate cognizance of the importance of standardization of these substances, in addition to their management by Official Methods. 

The Council encourages industry to employ machine-readable coding (e.g. bar coding) in its labeling of drug products. The Council recognizes the importance of standardization of these codes for this use.

The selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility of the standard method assure the main characteristic of analytical information for quality control reliability. The reliability of the analytical information has been discussed in a number of books251252 on quality assurance and accreditation. The accreditation of the laboratory requires as a first step the utilization of standards and standard methods for quality control, indicating the importance of standards for this purpose. The standards, as well as the standard methods, must be more reliable. Only by using more reliable standards and standard methods it is possible to obtain reliable analytical information.

European Aerospace and Defence identified importance of standards in order to implement PLM approach for development of their products in the supply chain. It is illustrated by the activities of the ASD Strategic Standardization Group (SSG). 

These two case studies demonstrate the flexibility and utility of the proposed processes. They also indicate an important potential role for expert panels in determining the types and levels of assessment to ensure the safety of two very different ingredients. Their application also shows the importance of standardized elements and frameworks when considering the safety of new ingredients added to infant formulas. 

In the discussion of pharmaceuticals and the importance of standard operating procedures, an example involving the flying of paper airplanes was used. Curious as to my talent in such an endeavor, I armed myself with several sheets of white copy paper and went to an empty classroom on the first floor. I assembled and flew four paper airplanes and each time carefully measured the flight distance. They flew 12.7, 13.1, 12.5, and 13.0 feet. A bar chart (Figure 13.1) can be easily made.
