Global-warming potential

Environmental concerns are extremely important when designing a refrigerant system and need to be taken into consideration. Several factors come into play and need to be mentioned. These are global warming potential (GWP), total equivalent warming impact (TEWI), and ODP. [Pg.131]

An even more streamlined approach scores each stage of the life cycle for impact on a number of environmental indicators. Typical indicators include resource depletion, global warming potential, smog production, acidification, eutrophication, toxic waste production and biodiversity impact. Each greenhouse gas differs in its ability to absorb heat in the atmosphere. HFCs and PFCs are the most heat-absorbent. Methane traps over 21 times more heat per molecule than carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide absorbs 270 times more heat per molecule than carbon dioxide. Often, estimates of greenhouse gas emissions are presented in units of millions of metric tons of carbon equivalents (MMTCE), which weighs each gas by its GWP value, that is, Global Warming Potential. [Pg.91]
