The predicted cumulative cash-flow curve for a project throughout its life forms the basis for more detailed evaluation. Many quantitative measures or indices have been proposed. In each case, important features of the cumulative cash-flow curve are identified and transformed into a single numerical measure as an index.

A new initiative introduced by Derwent during 1995 is the Patents Citation Index, an on-line database of patent citations that includes both examiners citations and patentees citations to prior art from patent specifications. Coordinate Indexing and Boolean Logic. Three methods of indexing have been prominent in the chemical Hterature in recent times. The first, articulated indexing, has been used in printed Chemicaly hstracts subject indexes from their earliest days until well into the 1990s. A number of important concepts are identified as permissible index entries, including specific compounds, material types, reactions, and processes. Indexings and Lattice Parameter Determination. From a powder pattern of a single component it is possible to determine the indices of many reflections. From this information and the 20-values for the reflections, it is possible to determine the unit cell parameters. As with single crystals this information can then be used to identify the material by searching the NIST Crystal Data File (see "SmaU Molecule Single Stmcture Determination" above). 

A.n log ue Synthesis. Two notable examples, in which analogues have greater therapeutic indexes than the parent dmgs, have been identified in Phase I trials. These are carboplatin (29) and ado2elesin (37) (35). Carboplatin s approval was based on its comparable efficacy to cis-platinum (28) and its more favorable toxicity profile, ie, reduced and delayed episodes of emesis, reduced ototoxicity, etc. On the other hand, ado2elesin, a totally synthetic analogue of natural product CC1065, has demonstrated a similar potency and antitumor activity profile as its natural prototype but is devoid of the delayed death UabiUty associated with the parent dmg in animals (36). 

As an example, the battery-limits capital cost can be estimated for the production of 10,000 t/yr of ethylene (qv) from ethanol (11). Seven processing blocks, ie, vaporizer, reactor, water quench, compressor, dryer, distillation, and energy recovery, can be identified. Partial Molar Properties Consider a homogeneous fluid solution comprised of any number of chemical species. For such a PVT system let the symbol M represent the molar (or unit-mass) value of any extensive thermodynamic property of the solution, where M may stand in turn for U, H, S, and so on. A total-system property is then nM, where n = Xi/i, and i is the index identifying chemical species. Fire and Explosion Index (Ffrom fires and explosions. frequency The rate at which observed or predicted events occur. HAZOP HAZOP stands for hazard and operabihty studies. This is a set of formal hazard identification and ehmination procedures designed to identify hazards to people, process plants, and the environment. See subsequent sections for a more complete description. 

The goals of the F EI are to raise awareness of loss potential and identify ways to reduce potential severity and potential dollar loss in a cost-effective manner. TLe index number has significance as a comparison and in calculations to estimate the maximum probable property damage (MPPD). It also provides a method for measuring tbe effect of outage (plant being shut down) on the business. It is easy for users to get credible results with a small amount of training. 

Almost all the entries in Chapters 4, 5 and 6 have CAS (Chemical Abstract Service) Registry Numbers to identify them, and these have been entered for each substance. Unlike chemical names which may have more than one synonymous name, there is only one CAS Registry Number for each substance (with only a few exceptions, e.g. where a substance may have another number before purification, or before determination of absolute configuration). To simplify the method for locating the purification of a substance, a CAS Registry Number Index with the respective page numbers has been included after the General Index at the end of the book.
