Antibacterial agent, preservative for water treatment, metalworking fluids, oil production, de-odorizing formaldehyde releaser. Used as a bactericide in pesticide products and consumer products, building materials or furnishings. Registered by EPA as an antimicrobial and disinfectant. In mordant dyes, phenols, naphthols, and enolizable carbonyl compounds, such as pyrazolones, are generally the couplers. As a rule, 2 1 metal complexes are formed ia the afterchroming process. A typical example of a mordant dye is Eriochrome Black T (18b) which is made from the important dyestuff iatermediate nitro-l,2,4-acid, 4-amiQO-3-hydroxy-7-nitro-l-naphthalenesulfonic acid [6259-63-8]. Eriochrome Red B [3618-63-1] (49) (Cl Mordant Red 7 Cl 18760) (1, 2,4-acid — l-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone) is another example. The equiUbrium of the two tautomeric forms depends on the nature of the solvent. 

From the various modifications that have been made on the phenylbutazone structure in order to increase activity and reduce toxicity it has been found that the activity persists when methyl, chloro, hydroxy or nitro groups are introduced into the para position of one or both benzene rings (see oxyphenbutazone (712) as an example). Mofebutazone (714) has also been used in Europe for several years as an antirheumatic drug. 

Biocides that function as formaldehyde-releasers comprise about 60 % of total sales of antimicrobials (29). Thus, such antimicrobials are expected to be common additions to metalworking fluids. Examples of formaldehyde-releasing antimicrobials are tris(hydroxy methyl) nitromethane, trivially called tris nitro, 4,4 -(2-ethyl-2-...

Diese Methode eignet sich auch fiir die Mononitrierung von 4-Methyl- bzw. 4-Chlor-phenol. Aus 4-Methoxy-phenol erhalt man ausschlieBlich 2,6-Dinitro-phenol. Die Nitrierung von 2-Hydroxy-naphthalin liefert 2-Hydroxy- 1-nitro-naphthalin bzw. 2,6-Dinitro-2-hydroxy-naphthalin in 68 bzw. 32%iger Ausbeute. Die Nitrierung von Hetarenen wie Pyrrol oder Indol fuhrt dagegen selbst bei — 78° zu teerartigen Produkten. 

A similar argument can be applied to the results of later work by Idelson et al.i9 In this they prepared the chromium complex (133) by interaction of the 1 1 chromium complex of 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-(2-hydroxy-4-cyanonaphth-l-ylazo)-5-pyrazolone and diethylenetriamine and by reaction of the azo compound with [Cr(CO)3dien]. Identical products were obtained and, since the diethylenetriamine occupies9 a facial position in [Cr(CO)3dien], it was concluded that the complex (133) had a facial configuration.
