Diese Methode eignet sich auch fiir die Mononitrierung von 4-Methyl- bzw. 4-Chlor-phenol. Aus 4-Methoxy-phenol erhalt man ausschlieBlich 2,6-Dinitro-phenol. Die Nitrierung von 2-Hydroxy-naphthalin liefert 2-Hydroxy- 1-nitro-naphthalin bzw. 2,6-Dinitro-2-hydroxy-naphthalin in 68 bzw. 32%iger Ausbeute. Die Nitrierung von Hetarenen wie Pyrrol oder Indol fuhrt dagegen selbst bei — 78° zu teerartigen Produkten.

The best methods of synthesis are the potash fusion of phenol ortho-sulphonic acid and from ortho-chlor phenol with alkali. 

Resorcinol, 1-3-Di-hydroxy Benzene.—The meta-di-hydroxy benzene is known as resorcinol or resorcin. It is also obtained from plant resins by alkali fusion. Synthetically it is prepared from phenol meta-sulphonic acid and from meta-chlor phenol. In the case of chlor phenol the para compound also yields meta-di-hydroxy benzene due to position rearrangement. 

Fortunately we are able to replace bromphenol blue and brom-cresol purple with other sulfonephthaleins which do not show dichromatism. W. C. Harden and N. L. Drake have prepared tetrabromophenoltetrabromosulfonephthalein (tetrabrom-phenol blue) which may be used in place of bromphenol blue. Both indicators have the same transformation range (pH 3.0-4.6) with a color change from pure yellow to pure blue. Chlor-phenol red, with a color change from yellow to red, is a good substitute for bromcresol purple. 

The sulfonephthaleins are characterized by pronounced color changes and by the stability of both forms. Bromphenol blue and bromcresol purple are less satisfactory for pH determinations since they show a marked dichromatism during transformation. Fortunately these indicators may be replaced by tetrabromo-phenoltetrabromosulfonephthalein, bromcresol green, and chlor-phenol red.

Chlor-phcnoxy)-dialkoxy-methane allgemeine Arbeitsvorschrift (Methode A)26 4-Chlor-phenol gibt man zu einem 20%igen UberschuB Trialkoxy-methan und 0,1 mol-% 4-Toluolsulfonsaure. Man erhitzt und destilliert bei 20 Torr (2,67 kPa) den freigesetzten Alkohol ab.
