Short-term immunotherapy is used when patients develop significant dangerous or intolerable symptoms from their myasthenia. Intravenous immunoglobulin from pooled human gamma globulin can be administered for a rapid result (24 to 72 hours). 

Impaired immune responses render the subject more liable to bacterial and viral infections. Treat all infection early and vigorously (using bactericidal drugs where practicable) use human gamma globulin to protect if there is exposure to virus infections, e.g. measles, varicella. For example, patients who have not had chickenpox and are receiving therapeutic (as opposed to replacement) doses of corticosteroid are at risk of severe chickenpox they should receive varicella-zoster immunoglobulin if there has been contact with the disease within the previous 3 months. 

The von Smoluchowski scheme based on Equations 5.326 and 5.327 has found numerous applications. An example for biochemical application is the study of the kinetics of flocculation of latex particles caused by human gamma globulin in the presence of specific key-lock interactions. The infinite set of von Smoluchowski equations (Equation 5.319) was solved by Bak and Heilmann in the particular case when the aggregates cannot grow larger than a given size an explicit analytical solution was obtained by these authors. 

Molecules that are too small to induce antibody formation (formula weight 1000 to 5000, called haptens as opposed to antigens, e.g., smaller polypeptides, steroids) are linked to carriers such as proteins or synthetic compounds before they are injected. Common carriers are human gamma globulin and albumin, synthetic peptides, and polymers.

Atlantic halibut were injected i.p. with an experimental vaccine of human gamma globulin with either FCA or Montanide ISA711 as adjuvants (Bowden et al. 2003). Antibody responses and intraperitoneal adhesions were examined every month for up to 12 months. FCA produced the highest and fastest antibody response and the fastest growth of intraperitoneal adhesions. In the group injected with the montanide adjuvant, only 4 of 47 fish reached a titre of 1 1000 (month 6) compared to 27 of 48 fish in the FCA group (after 2 months) (Bowden et al. 2003).
