Hormones properties

The physiological significance of mucoproteins in serum is unknown but it is tempting to speculate that they may simply be intermediate stages in the synthesis of albumins and globulins. However, it will be seen below that mucoproteins with hormone properties can be isolated from serum of pregnant mares, and that the enzyme choline esterase, is probably a serum mucoprotein.

Danazol is a weak androgen and also has a series of other hormonal and anti-hormonal properties. It inhibits pituitary gonadotropin and has been used in the treatment of endometriosis, fibrocystic disease of the breast, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and hereditary angioedema. Its hepatotoxic effects include reversible rises in serum transaminases and cholestatic hepatitis a few cases of hepatocellular tumors have been reported. 

Progestogens given alone for contraceptive purposes can cause a number of adverse effects, some of which may reflect their other hormonal properties while others are non-specific. Headache, nausea and vomiting, breast tenderness, and pain in the back or abdomen can occur. 

The most important characteristics of the Rhodonines are not their hormonal properties, as in the case of the retinenes, but their electronic properties, especially when in the liquid crystalline state. These properties are not directly relatable to their relatives, the retinenes. They are more closely associated with another group of relatives, the oxonols. The oxonols consist of two oxygen atoms connected by a conjugated carbon chain. The oxonols and the phthaleins are members of the carboxylic acid family, a large well-known family of dyes. ... 

Recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology has hod a dramatic impact on our ability to produce complex proteins and polypeptides. structurally identical with those found in vivo. Thyroglobulin. a glycoprotein, is composed of several peptide chains it also contains 0.5 to 1% iodine and 8 (o 10% carbohydrate in (he form of two types of poly.saccharide. The formation of thyroglobulin is regulated by TSH. Thyroglobulin has no hormonal properties. I( must be hydrolyzed to release the hormonal iodothyronines thyroxine and liothy-lonine (see Thyroid Hormones" in Chapter 19).
