The crystal structure of CsV2Os may be described in terms of (V2Os)2- layers held together by cesium atoms (Fig. 26) [69, 70]. Within layers, the vanadium(IV) ions are coupled together to form pairs of edge-sharing square pyramids. Note that similar units were observed in (V0)2P207 [71]. 

Jahn-Teller distortion of copper(II) polyhedra, which induces the localization of unpaired electrons in the basal plane of the square-pyramids. As a result, it can be assumed that the system reduces to a chain of altematingly spaced metal ions with exchange interactions obeying the sequence J-J-j-J-J-j. .. [73]. 

Although, Cu3(P04)2 and A3Cu3(P04)4 present the same basic units, the related magnetic behaviors are very different [73]. Thus, the former compound exhibits a broad maximum of susceptibility around 30 K (Fig. 30) which is 

In contrast, the magnetic susceptibility of A3Cu3(P04)4 (with A=Ca, Sr) may be described in terms of quasi-isolated [Cu3] units, at least for T 30 K (Fig. 31). Assuming that the interaction between nearest neighbors is isotropic, the exchange Hamiltonian is merely written as  

Clearly, this model gives a very good description of the data down to 1 K (Figs. 31-32), for the parameters listed in Table 6. As anticipated above, the leading interaction (antiferromagnetic) occurs within [Cu3] trimers. Due to the relative stacking of these trimers, the non-compensated spins are parallel in the
