Hopper Loaders

Machine process controls coordinate individual functions of the clamp, injection unit, ejector mechanism, and mold systems and accessories such as core pulls and unscrewing dies for threaded parts. The more advanced controls employ a feedback system (closed loop) to provide much tighter control over actual parameters vs. setpoints. High-level controls are capable of communicating with auxiliary equipment such as chillers, hopper loaders, mold temperature controllers, robots, etc., and displaying all machine parameters and conditions (Chapter 3)...

The pellets of plastic are first transferred from storage to the hopper on the extruder, which serves as a reservoir to feed the solid particles into the barrel. When molding cellulosic materials good housekeeping is essential always use hopper lids and hopper loader/dryers wherever possible. Vented barrels work well with cellulosics.

The hopper loader is effective in minimizing contamination, reducing spilling, and eliminating hand operations. Most loaders work on the air conveyor principle which employs tubes and a venturi jet to transfer the pellets from the carton to the hopper. The level of plastic pellets in the hopper is maintained automatically. 

Blow moulded bottles were pigmented by pre-blending natural polymer with a yellow masterbatch in steel drums using an end-over-end blender. By dedicating individual drums to a particular colour, potential cross-contamination of colours was minimised, and cleaning was unnecessary. Transfer was by a standard vacuum hopper loader to the blow moulder hopper. 

Normal material handling techniques such as a hopper loader are readily used with EVA. However, when pneumatically transporting this material over long distances the design of the handling system must accommodate the low surface hardness and the low softening point of EVA. 

Because of the railroad-car shortage that has persisted for many years, boxcars are often used for bulk materials. Lined with suitable materials to prevent contamination and with special bulkheads at each door, these cars are acceptable substitutes for covered hopper cars even though unloading is more difficult. Vacuum conveying wands are used to pick up the material, as are front-end-loader-type vehicles. 

The activity of catalyst degrades with time. The loss of activity is primarily due to impurities in the FCC feed, such as nickel, vanadium, and sodium, and to thermal and hydrothermal deactivation mechanisms. To maintain the desired activity, fresh catalyst is continually added to the unit. Fresh catalyst is stored in a fresh catalyst hopper and, in most units, is added automatically to the regenerator via a catalyst loader. 

After manufacture and characterization, the SMZ was shipped to OGI on flatbed trucks in 1-m3 super sacks. Depending on the type of operation, such handling devices as dumping hoppers, tilt carts, four-wheeled carts, trailer trains, rolling waste cans, scrap conveyors, chutes, and pallets are used to move waste material for recycling or disposal. At the disposal area, waste material is sometimes placed on an open trailer or dumped into a trash compactor. A skid steer loader may also be used to load a trainer or compactor. Mechanization is desirable to reduce costs to the extent possible if waste-reduction efforts have not fully ehminated waste. 

The screw shredder mentioned earlier as a machine for debaling is also used for the initial size reduction of plastic items, and in particular when these are very voluminous and not too tough. It is suited for very large items or bundles of material and has the advantage of being fitted with a very large feed hopper that can be filled by bucket loader or similar device. 

The feed system holds the solid material and delivers it to the extruder. The main components are the hopper and the feed throat. A material handling system (e.g., silo and vacuum loader) may transport the raw material to the hopper.
