Static secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SSIMS) is another surface selective technique for surface characterisation [262, 263, 264]. The information obtained from SSIMS is complementary to XPS because SSIMS can differentiate those polymers that give very similar XPS spectra. Moreover, it offers more surface selectivity than XPS. The typical sampling depth of SSIMS is approximately 1 nm. This method has sensitivity, sufficient to detect amounts less than a monomolecular layer, particularly when a high resolution time-of-flight (ToF) mass analyser is used [265]. [Pg.281]

High resolution Time-Of-Flight (TOF) MS gives protonated molecular ions of most PAs with very high mass accuracy. This allows the determination of empirical sum formulae and easy searching for PAs using databases from empirical formulae with accurately calculated masses. Although less sensitive than LC-MS/MS methods, spectra are obtained for all ionizable compounds and the raw data can be searched retrospectively. [Pg.1060]

To minimize surface damage, static SIMS mass spectrometers should be as efficient as possible for detecting the total yield of secondary ions from a surface. Also, to be able to separate elemental from molecular species, and molecular species from each other, the mass resolution usually given as the mass m divided by the separable mass Am, should be very high. With this in mind, two types of mass spectrometer have been used - in early work mainly quadrupole mass filters and, more recently, time-of-flight mass spectrometers. [Pg.89]
