If the surface tension of a liquid is lowered by the addition of a solute, then, by the Gibbs equation, the solute must be adsorbed at the interface. This adsorption may amount to enough to correspond to a monomolecular layer of solute on the surface. The amount of collector used is necessarily very small because surface coverages of a monomolecular layer or less are required to impart sufficient hydrophobicity to the mineral. The usages typically range from 1—100 g of collector per ton of ore treated for sulfide flotation (typically 0.2—10% value metal content ia the ore) and 100—1000 g/1 for nonsulfide flotation (1—20% value mineral content) (10). 

Paraffin wax additives are effective in overcoming surface inhibition by forming a monomolecular wax layer at the curing surface. Although effective in excluding oxygen, this waxy layer must be removed for subsequent lamination or bonding processes (see Waxes). 

Static electrification may not be a property of the basic stmcture, but of a new surface formed by a monomolecular layer of water (82). All textile fibers at a relative humidity, at which a continuous monomolecular layer is formed, actually do have the same charge density. This is attributed to the absence of ionic transport which caimot occur in a monomolecular layer. At higher moisture levels than required to form a monomolecular layer, ionic conductivity can occur because of excess water molecules and by hydration of the ions. At very low moisture-regain levels, all materials acquire the same charge (83). 

In a similar procedure, the atomizer test, which depends on the behavior of an advancing rather than a receding contact angle, a fine mist of water is apphed to the metal surface and the spreading of water is observed. On a clean surface, water spreads to a uniform film. With oleic acid as the test soil, the atomizer test can detect the presence of 10 mg of soil per cm, less than a monomolecular layer (115). For steel that is to be electroplated, the copper dip test is often employed. Steel is dipped into a cupric salt solution and the eveimess of the resulting metallic copper deposit is noted. 

The PVC is simply P /Vf and is determined by the volume of filler added to the formulation. The CPVC occurs when the binder particles are close packed and Vv = 0. At the CPVC, there is Just enough binder to coat all of the filler particles and the substrate with at least monomolecular layer of binder, and fill the interstices between particles.
