Thermogravimetry high resolution

Various approaches to improving resolution while keeping the duration of the experiment to a few minutes have been suggested. One commercial implementation allows the use of four experimental regimes

In this current work, cerium-modified MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve was synthesized using heptahydrated cerium chloride, colloidal fumed-silica, sodium hydroxide, cethyltrimethylammonium bromide and water. The incorporation of cerium to MCM-41 improved the quality, stability and acid properties of the resulting ordered mesoporous material. Its surface and structural properties were extensively studied by nitrogen adsorption and high-resolution thermogravimetry.

Such a differential heating program leads to increased sensitivity and resolution in TGA but also to a much increased time-frame for the analysis. Dynamic rate TG appears to have addressed both of these features and hence has much potential as a high resolution/ rapid thermal analysis system, which, unlike SCTA, can be applied for rapid and reproducible thermal analysis of a wide range of complex materials. Finally, modulated temperature thermogravimetrie analysis has enhanced potential for the kinetic analysis of thermal decomposition reactions over conventional TGA because of its greater resolution of thermal events. 

The solid resins in powder paints are produced in two different ways. In the conventional method, the resin is produced in isobutyl methyl ketone. In the fusion method, bisphenol-A is condensed catalytically without solvents to give a liquid epoxy resin. In this study, the powders were cured in a device permitting precise control of temperature, type of atmosphere, rate of gas flow, and the collection of the volatile compounds. The compounds were studied with a high-resolution GC and a GC-MS. The mass loss of the powders during curing was studied by thermogravimetry.
