To a stirred solution of 122 mg of ll,15-dideoxy-ll-acetoxy-16-methyl-15-oxo-18,19-tetradehydro-5,6,7-trinor- 4,8-inter-m-phenylene PGI2 in 10 ml of methanol was added 150 mg of cerium chloride heptahydrate, and then the solution was cooled in an ice bath, and 15 mg of sodium borohydride was added to the solution. After 10 min, to the mixture was added 2 ml of aqueous saturated solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate, and the mixture was further stirred for 10 min. 

Cerium chloride heptahydrate (560 mg, 1.5 mmol) is quickly ground to a fine powder in a mortar and placed in a 30 mL two-necked flask. The flask is immersed in an oil bath and heated gradually to 135-140 °C with evacuation (ca. 0.1 mmHg). After 1 h, a magnetic stirrer is placed in the flask and the cerium chloride is dried completely by stirring at the same temperature in vacuo for a further 1 h. 

The following procedure is recommended for the small-scale preparatiai of anhydrous cerium chloride. Cerium chloride heptahydrate (ca. 20 g) is placed in a round-bottomed flask connected to a dry ice trap. The flask is evacuated and heated to lOO C for 2 h. The resulting opaque solid is quickly pulverized in a mortar and is heated again, in vacuo at the same temperature, for 2 h with intermittent shaking. A stirrer is then placed in the flask, which is subsequently evacuated, and the bath temperature is raised to 135-140 C. Drying is complete after 2-3 h of stirring. 

In this current work, cerium-modified MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve was synthesized using heptahydrated cerium chloride, colloidal fumed-silica, sodium hydroxide, cethyltrimethylammonium bromide and water. The incorporation of cerium to MCM-41 improved the quality, stability and acid properties of the resulting ordered mesoporous material. Its surface and structural properties were extensively studied by nitrogen adsorption and high-resolution thermogravimetry.

Methadone hydrochloride (600.0 mg,1.74 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (10 ml) and the solution was stirred whilst sodium borohydride (3.47 mmol) was added portion-wise over a period of 5 min. When the addition was complete a spatula end of cerium (III) chloride heptahydrate was added. The resultant solution was allowed to stir at room temperature for 30 min then the ethanol was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was portioned between diethyl ether (40 ml) and water (40 ml). The aqueous layer was extracted with more diethyl ether (2 times 20 ml) and then the combined organics were washed with brine (40 ml) and dried (MgS04). The ether was removed under reduced pressure to leave 435.0 mg, (80%) of 6-dimethylamino-4,4-diphenyl-3-heptanol.

A variant on iodine deprotections is a report on the cleavage of PMB ethers by a mixture of cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate and sodium iodide in refluxing acetonitrile.210 A proposed mechanism involves polarization of the ethereal link (158, Scheme 43), followed by generation of a quinone-like species, and attack by nucleophilic iodide to afford p-methoxybenzyl iodide. 

Cerium(lll) chloride heptahydrate was purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc., and ground with a mortar and pestle just before use. 

Both InBr3 and InCl3 mediate the conjugate addition of pyrroles and indoles to enones <2001S2165, 2002JOC3700>, without problems of acid-catalyzed oligomerization, e.g., Scheme 44. Cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate and sodium... 

Among the less common reagents that have been recommended for the cleavage of dioxolanes of aldehydes and ketones is a concoction of samarium(III) chloride and chlorotrimethylsilane in THF33 or sodium iodide and cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate in acetonitrile at room temperature.34 The latter reagent achieves selective removal of a dioxolane ring in the presence of two rather labile phenolic terf-butyldimethyisilyl ethers [Scheme 2 11].35 DDQ in aqueous acetonitrile at room temperature36 also hydrolyses acetals. The temperature of the oil bath must be kept below 100°C to minimize the hydrolysis of cerium(lll) chloride heptahydrate to CeOCI.
