High Resolution Mass Spectrometry HR-MS

Generally, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) aims to achieve both high mass resolution and high mass accuracy. These quantities have been introduced without considering the means by which they can be measured. The key to this problem is mass calibration. Resolution alone can separate ions with m/z in close proximity, but it does not automatically reveal where on the m/z axis the respective signals are located. This section deals with the techniques for establishing accurate mass data and their analytical evaluation [32,33]. [Pg.99]

ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) is frequently used for determining ultratrace amounts of technetium [9]. In spite of the high cost of the equipment, this detection method is far superior to other radiometric methods as regards sensitivity. When a double focussing high-resolution system is used (HR-ICP-MS) and an ultrasonic nebulizer is introduced [10], the detection limit is in the order 0.002 mBq. The ICP-MS method has been successfully applied to the determination of environmental "Tc as well as to other long-lived radionuclides of neptunium and plutonium in the environment. [Pg.25]

There are three primary instrumental approaches to eliminating or reducing interferences in atomic mass spectrometry (1) use of high mass resolution ICP-MS (HR-ICP-MS) (2) use of a collision cell to break apart polyatomic interferences (3) use of gas phase chemical reactions in a reaction cell to eliminate polyatomic interferences. The approach of changing the instrument operating conditions to form a cool or cold plasma has been discussed. [Pg.708]
