Hers disease

Type VI Hers disease Deficiency of liver phosphorylase High glycogen content in liver, tendency toward hypoglycemia. [Pg.152]

The success of therapy for DM is measured by the ability of the patient to manage his or her disease appropriately between health care provider visits. [Pg.664]

In liver phosphorylase deficiency (glycogenosis type VI, Hers disease Fig. 42-1) and in two genetic forms of phosphorylase kinase deficiency, one of which is X-linked recessive, the other of which is autosomal recessive, hypoglycemia is either absent or mild. Symptoms of brain dysfunction do not usually occur (type VIII, Fig. 42-1) [1],... [Pg.705]

Psychoeducation within the disease model of treatment focuses primarily upon teaching the client how to treat his or her disease. Psychoeducation orients the client to the philosophy of the disease model, then teaches how to treat the disease once the person has accepted that she or he has it. Part of the client education will include discussions about the potency of denial to place a person in harm s way. The client is instructed to be totally honest to themselves about their powerlessness over the disease and about the need to seek support from a 12-step support group. Significant amounts of recovery-related reading materials may be assigned in treatment, such as personal accounts of 12-step recoveries by other people and traditional 12-step texts sponsored by support groups such as NA, CA, or MA. [Pg.217]

McArdle s disease is associated with excessive deposits of glycogen in muscle, and Hers disease with its deposition in liver. In both cases phosphorylase levels in the affected tissues are very low. In spite of this, glycogen synthesis is unimpaired, which is incompatible with glyco-genesis occurring through the action of phosphorylase. [Pg.61]

Hepatic Glycogen Phosphorylase Deficiency (Hers Disease)... [Pg.195]

Likewise in the case of one Lady Hawkins, Forman noted that they suspected me to be a magician c. because I told her disease and sawe not her water . [Pg.140]

Her disease could be treated because it was natural, but she would become a difficult patient, and Forman would later add a note about unnatural melancholy as a partial cause of her disease. The next month she consulted Forman again, having consumed too much sturgeon and Rhenish wine, and asked whether she was pregnant. Forman and Allen became friends and Forman recorded information that she conveyed outside of consultations. For instance, he noted that he had dined with her and promised her that she would soon be with child, then her husband returned home and coked her. ... [Pg.145]

The next consultation, the second of the set of three, was again conducted by messenger her self sent yt , meaning urine or a letter. This entry is brief FFer condition was the same, and Forman judged yt seames ther wilbe som alteration in her shortly within 7 daies she will die . Ten days later she consulted him again. This time her questions conformed to one of Forman s standard formulas what was the state of her disease, and would she get better... [Pg.146]

Overall the goal of therapy for Mrs CR is to provide palliation of her current symptoms as any systemic therapy will not be curative due to the advanced nature of her disease, and to control the progression of her cancer. [Pg.197]

Patient education and counselling is an essential part of ensuring that patients fully understand their treatment and its context in the management of their disease. Patients need to understand the overall objective of the treatment being given as well, in order to have a realistic view of what the treatment is aiming to achieve. In this case, Mrs RP will almost certainly have discussed this first with her clinician who will have explained the palliative intent of treatment and the fact that it is not curative due to the advanced nature of her disease. [Pg.215]

Limitation. The radiation dose received by the personnel handling radioactive material will never exceed the legally established dose limits. It has to be taken into account that such limitations do not apply to patients receiving radiopharmaceuticals as either diagnostic or therapeutic agents. But nuclear medicine physicians, nuclear physicists, and radiopharmacists must ensure that the amount of radiopharmaceutical administered to a patient is adapted to his or her disease and optimized to obtained the intended result. [Pg.64]

VI Liver glycogen phosphorylase Hers disease Enlarged liver hypoglycaemia... [Pg.111]

Educating the patient about his or her disease and the use of the anti-infective drug that is being prescribed is essential for effective therapy. The right drug with the right route of administration cannot be effective unless the patient uses or takes the medication appropriately. [Pg.177]

D-l) Liver phosphorylase deficiency (Type VI GSD Hers Disease), There is glycogen accumulation in the liver and liver enlargement. There is growth retardation, as amino acids are shunted toward gluconeogenesis rather than growth. [Pg.50]

VI Hers disease Phosphorylase Liver Increased amount. Like type I, but milder course. [Pg.888]

Althongh the girl also had hepatitis C virus infection during the conrse of her disease, renal dysfunction preceded this. The persistence of hematuria and proteinuria after the disappearance of hepatitis C virus RNA also argued against a role of hepatitis C infection. [Pg.1546]

A 54-year-old woman with an 8-year history of pemphigus vulgaris had a flare-up of her disease, refractory to oral glucocorticoids, after taking nifedipine for 2 years for hypertension. The nifedipine was withdrawn and she was given high-dose immunosuppressant treatment with prednisone and azathioprine. The lesions subsided promptly and cleared totally within several weeks. [Pg.2519]

A 36-year-old patient started taking a combination of herbal products including Echinacea, and 2 weeks later she presented with generalized muscle weakness that limited her ambulation and ability to use her hands. She was found to have distal renal tubular acidosis and was extremely hypokalemic (K+ of 1.3). Over 4 days she received 1200 mEq of sodium bicarbonate and 400 mEq of potassium chloride along with other electrolyte supplements to correct the imbalances. After her serum electrolytes were corrected, her muscle weakness improved rapidly. She was diagnosed and treated for Sjogren s syndrome and her condition rapidly improved. The researchers suggested that her use of the immunostimulant Echinacea could have contributed to the activation of her autoimmune disease, which ultimately caused her severe metabolic disturbances. Because she had remained symptom free for more than 3 years, the authors concluded that, after review, her disease was relatively mild and was exacerbated by Echinacea (34). [Pg.105]

Assess patient s literacy and comprehension and modify educational counseling as needed. Don t rely on patient knowledge about his or her disease, alone, to improve comphance. [Pg.1148]

The client does not like the standard treatment regimen for his or her disease. [Pg.271]

For Hers disease, a glycogenosis, (Prob. 13.2) explain the likely symptoms of this inborn error of metabolism and describe the nature of the accumulated glycogen. [Pg.430]

Few would now dispute that the behavior of every human cancer is determined to a significant extent by the natural resistance of the patient to his or her disease. As a result, there is now widespread recognition that very substantial benefits in cancer management would be achieved if practical methods could be devised to enhance resistance. [Pg.593]
