The varicella vaccine is relatively new and has only been recommended for use since 1996, therefore its true impact on chickenpox and herpes zoster is not yet known. Its continued use will undoubtedly change the epidemiology of these diseases. [Pg.1246]

A single dose of zoster vaccine is recommended for adults aged >60 years regardless of whether they report a prior episode of herpes zoster. Persons with chronic medical conditions may be vaccinated unless a contraindication or precaution exists for their condition. [Pg.581]

Herpes Zoster (Shingles) Zostavax is a live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine for the prevention of herpes zoster in individuals 60 years or older. It is supplied in frozen lyophilized form and reconstituted before vaccination. The vaccine boosts VZV-specific immunity and protects individuals against zosters and its complications. [Pg.106]

Infection risk An immunocompetent 3-year-old girl developed encephalitis and ophthalmic herpes zoster 20 months after immunization with varicella zoster virus vaccine [29 ]. Molecular analysis confirmed that the vaccine strain was the causative agent and this was therefore a between-the-eyes adverse reaction of type 4 [30 ]. After an intravenous course of aciclovir, the child made a full recovery with no neurological sequelae. [Pg.506]

Infection risk Recurrent herpes zoster in an immunocompetent 2-year-old child was associated with the vaccine strain of varicella zoster virus by polymerase chain reaction this is a rare complication [47 ]. [Pg.663]

A previously healthy boy who had received varicella vaccine developed herpes zoster with meningitis [48 ]. The vaccine strain recovered from scabs of three skin lesions had the wild-type allele at position 108111, a vaccine marker never previously associated with vaccine-associated adverse events. The vaccine strain from cerebrospinal fluid also contained mutations never previously observed at vaccine-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms that would alter amino acid sequences in ORF54 and ORF59. The presence of distinct strains in the skin lesions and... [Pg.663]

A link between ophthalmic complications and the zoster vaccine has been proposed. An 86-year-old man, with previous herpes zoster ophthalmicus, developed anterior uveitis following administration of Zostavax . This was treated successfully with topical steroids [76 ]. [Pg.474]

Another study looked at the association between herpes zoster (HZ) vaccination and HZ incidence in adults aged 60 years and over with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis or IBD (individuals who have an increased risk of HZ due to both the disease processes and the treatments used). They assessed whether exposure to biologies affects this association. This retrospective cohort study of over 400,000 adults (including 4% who received the zoster vaccine) found that receipt of the vaccine was not associated with an increased short-term (within 42 days of vaccination) risk of HZ, including in those individuals treated with biologies [80 ]. [Pg.475]

The zoster vaccine is widely recommended for the elderly for the prevention of herpes zoster. The age groups for which it is recommended vary around the world. For instance, the ACIP recommends the zoster vaccine for adults over the age of 60. This includes individuals who have had previous episodes of herpes zoster, or those living with chronic medical conditions. In the United Kingdom, the recommended age group is 70- to 79-year-olds [81 ]. [Pg.475]
