Extensive information on the carbohydrate-binding specificity of the Helix pomatia lectin was obtained by examining the extent to which a large number of sugars inhibited the precipitation reaction between agglutinin and human blood-group A substance or Salmonella typhinurium SH 180 lipopolysaccharide83,178,581,582 (see Table XI).

Sephacryl (allyldextran cross-linked by N,N -methylenebisacrylamide) are the two types of dextran gel used in separation. Sephadex is mainly used as a glucose pol)rmer and employed for purification of many molecules such as lectins from Helix pomatia and Viciafaba, exoamylase from Pseudomonas stutzeri [14].

A number of lectins have been purified by affinity chromatography on 0-glycosyl polyacrylamide gels. The physicochemical properties of well-characterized lectins such as Glycine soja, Dolichos biflorus, Phaseolus lunatus.
