Continental Shelf. A variety of terms may be appHed to deposits in the continental shelf (conshelf) including beach, bank, alluvial, strand-line, heavy mineral, or placet. These contain mostly industrial materials, mineral sands, or precious metals (Table 1). [Pg.285]

Prominent among the heavy metals found in the wastewater generated in the copper sulfate industry are copper, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, antimony, lead, chromium, and zinc (Table 22.11). They are traced to the copper and acids sources used as raw materials. These pollutants are generally removed by precipitation, clarification, gravity separation, centrifugation, and filtration. Alkaline precipitation at pH values between 7 and 10 can eradicate copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc in the wastewater, while the quantity of arsenic can be reduced through the same process at a higher pH value. [Pg.932]

Chlorine-containing polymers such as poly(vinyl chloride) PVC undergo an autocatalytic dehydrochlorination reaction under the influence of elevated temperature and UV radiation. Since the HCl originating from the dehydro chlorination of the PVC chains is believed to sustain this autocatalytic process, stabilizers that irreversibly bond HCl can thus inhibit the degradation. Heavy metal compounds such as cadmium stearate or lead stearate are currently used for this purpose. However, alternatives are required due to environmental problems associated with the use of heavy metals. Indeed, the largest current application of LDH materials is in the polymer industry, mainly to stabilize PVC [3,229-232]. [Pg.214]

Various well-known industrial and municipal waste products particularly those from the base metal industry, contain appreciable amounts of Fe oxides which may make them suitable for remediation purposes. Two examples from industry are the residues from the alumina and the titanium industries. The extraction of either Al or Ti from the natural ores (bauxite and ilmenite/rutile, respectively) leaves behind an alkaline and acidic (sulphuric) residue, respectively, in which Fe oxides are enriched, as indicated by their names Red Mud and Red Gypsum . A sample of Red gypsum is reported to contain ca. 35% of Fe oxide consisting of goethite and hematite, half of which was oxalate soluble (Fauziah et al., 1996). As expected, this material had an appreciable adsorption capacity for phosphate and heavy metals and, if added to soils, could confer these properties on them (Peacock Rimmer, 2000),... [Pg.550]

C. Extraction. The major industrial source of In is in flue deposits, slags, and residues of the roasting and smelting of Zn and Pb ores. These materials have become concentrated in the element. They are leached with very dilute H2SO4 or HCl to put Zn+ in solution, leaving In203 in the residue. The residue is dissolved in stronger acid, and heavy metals are precipitated out as the sulfides. [Pg.165]
