Safety and Health Committees

If you have a health and safety committee, you could list what it does, who is on it and how often it meets. 

The Environment, Health and Safety Committee shall have the authority and the responsibility to assess any and all aspects of the company s decisions that pertain to operating policies and practices at its facilities to determine their impact on worker safely and health and on the environment in and around its facilities and to make recommendations to the board of directors and the management of the company. 

However, the policy assigns ultimate responsibility for safety to line management. Even the chairman of the board of directors Environment, Health and Safety Committee is a line manager as vice president for manufacturing. 

In many cases sulfuric acid is present at the user s site as part of a manufacturing process. The hazard risk is then generally small and under control nevertheless, all operators or company health and safety committees should periodically reexamine their acid handling systems to ensure that all that can be done to prevent dangerous situations occurring is in fact being done. 

Hazard Study 3 (Hazard and Operability study, HAZOP) is carried out when the design of the process is finalised and detailed. The basic premise of a Hazard and Operability study is that hazards may occur on chemical plant when situations arise which the designer had not thought about. HAZOP sets out to identify these situations. There are many books and publications giving instruction, advice and background to these studies, and some organisations make these freely available (for example, the Royal Society of Chemistry Environmental Health and Safety Committee s Notes on Hazard and Operability Studies 13 March 2001).

Eurther investigation hy the Joint Health and Safety Committee found that there was more going on in this accident than a mistake by a worker. If two or more union-appointed health and safety representatives request, in writing, that the employer set up a health and safety committee, then it must be done within 3 months of the request.
