Hazard perception

The rough comparison shown on Table I illustrates the risk or hazard perception. Household waste seldom causes fear in spite of its content yet it contains, for instance highly toxic cadmium or mercury in quantities much higher than e. g. the quantity of plutonium in nuclear waste. 

Hazard perception refers to the ability to perceive and anticipate hazards on the road ahead, in other words to read the road , and is usually tested using video-based stimuli (see, e.g., Quimby et al., 1986 McKenna and Crick, 1991 Grayson and Sexton, 2002). Hazard perception is a skill that is associated with collision risk (Quimby et al., 1986 Hull and Christie, 1993 McKenna and Horswill, 1999 Wells et al., 2008), and also is a skill that is known to vary with driving experience (McKenna and Crick, 1994 McKenna and Horswill, 1999).
