Risk perception hazard, definition

Following on from the initial problem definition in the bunker smdy (Example 10 in Section 6.1) it was clearly apparent that there were issues (such as harness design and bunker top access design) which could not be addressed by training whereas the issues of hazard awareness and risk perception could only be addressed by training. 

The word toxic is considered as synonymous with harmful and poisonous , with regard to the effects of these chemicals [6]. However, although toxicity , simply, is the ability of a substance to cause injury to biological tissue , the hazard (or risk) posed by a substance is the probability that this substance can cause injury in a given environment , which is broader in definition. The hazard posed by any substance is characterised by factors such as its toxicity, the details of its absorption and metabolisation as well as excretion, its speed of action, perceptible signs of its possible hazard(s), and its potential (if there is any) for fire or explosion. 

The above definitions and the tenor of the report are based on an approach to the subject of risk from the standpoint of the natural scientist. TTie view of the social scientist had more influence in the subsequent report that places greater emphasis on the perception of risk by individuals and the public at large, especially when overlaid by media involvement. Most managers do not have the time to consider what some will view as the esoteric components of risk. The Health and Safety Executive offer the following definition of hazard and risk ...
