Harvard pump

Inject the sample at a rate of 5 pL/min using a Harvard pump into the injection port of a precalibrated electrospray mass spectrometer. 

The animals are intubated via cannulation of the trachea with an 18-gage metal tube and ventilated (Harvard pump ventilator) at a tidal volume of 0.4 mL, frequency 120 breaths/min and positive end-expiratory pressure 2.5-3.0 cm H20.

In addition to the commercially available systems, several authors have described laboratory-built systems using commercially available components from companies such as Upchurch Scientific (Oak Harbor, WA). One of the first reported laboratory-built micro-bore HPLC systems was described by Simpson and Brown, which was a simple adaptation of a standard HPLC system to accept micro-bore columns built from guard columns. A complete system has been described based on dual microdialysis syringe pumps (CMA Microdialysis, Chelmsford, M A) or dual syringe pumps (Harvard Apparatus, Inc., Holliston, MA), a microinjection port, and a micro-column the latter components being obtained from Upchurch scientific (Figure 3.5). This system was coupled with a laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detector and used to measure neuropeptides in sub-microliter samples. A further modification of this system was built to perform immunoaffinity isolations of biomedically important analytes from clinical samples. ... 

For the non-reactive tracer tests, a solution containing KI was introduced to the bottom of the column (up-flow mode) using a Rainin Model SD-200 solvent delivery pump. The first non-reactive tracer test was performed after complete water saturation of a column. N-terminal sequence analyses were performed using ABI 477/120A or 473A protein sequencers. For mass spectrometric analyses, aliquots of the collected peak fractions were also concentrated in a Savant SpeedVac to 20 pmol/pL and infused using a Harvard syringe pump into a PE SCIEX API III electrospray mass spectrometer (ESI-MS) operating in the positive mode with an orifice potential of 80 volts.

Recently, an entirely new procedure for ocean disposal has been proposed by scientists working at Harvard and Columbia Universities. They suggest that the carbon dioxide should be pumped a few hundred metres into the porous sediment that covers the deep ocean floor. Under the prevailing conditions, the gas would be in dense liquid form and would soon convert to crystalline hydrate, which would then be locked into the structure of the porous sediment. Peristalsis-free pump, PHD 2000 Advanced Syringe Pump (Harvard Apparatus). For the stimulation of development with cAMP pulses, 10-mL syringes are connected with a hypodermic needle to 0.75 x 1.22 mm polyethylene tubing (LABOKRON 46470). 

The device was maintained at 37 °C, and de-ionized water at the same temperature was infused with an infusion pump (Model 2000 IW, Harvard Apparatus Co., USA), the flow rate of which was adjustable over a wide range. The pump activated a 5-mL syringe cormected to the device via polyethylene tubing.
