Now we must basify our solution. By doing this we will "unhook" the salt and transform the alkaloid into its "free base" form. For the ESPMs I made, I used precut 28"x 30" sheet aluminum that was about Vie" of an thick. For the side bar/framing material I used 1" by /4" aluminum bar stock cut into four 28" pieces for each panel. For the covers I used 3/32" thick Plexiglass that was cut at the hardware store to 28"x 30". When you purchase a cut Plexiglass sheet, it usually has a thin film on either side to protect the surface from scratches. Leave this film on while you drill and until you are ready to finally assemble the panel. It will protect the Plexiglass from scratches during construction. 

This particular specific gravity is not necessary, and a milder, less conductive solution of about 12% will work. For optimal performance however, you will want to work with a 29.4% solution. The solvent used to recrystallize PETN from is acetone. A good quality acetone can be purchased by the gallon at the local hardware store. Look in the paint section. PETN is very soluble in acetone, so it is not the ideal recrystallization solvent, but it is common and cheap. Besides, the suggested method found in the scientific books can be modified to give better results.

A tool kit composed of spanners, screwdrivers, etc. designed for HPLC systems is a useful addition to your laboratory. Although it is not necessary, it would be a good idea for the instructor of this course to purchase a "ground fault interrupter" (see page 57 and index) in a hardware store, attach a power cord (similar to the item above), and place it and its socket in a plastic "enclosure" box such as Radio Shack Catalog Number 270-1809. Then all 120 volt ac power, even for the soldering iron, can be obtained via this safety device. 

The injection molding maehme operates on 120 volts. An 18 gauge or heavier power cord with a ground lead and at least 6 long is needed. A 120 volt, 5 amp toggle switch is used to turn the machine off and on and an indicator light lets you know when the heater is in operation.
