The minimal hardware requirements, which are certainly adequate for all items discussed here, are an IBM or IBM-compatible PC equipped with at least 640 K RAM, a single floppy disk drive, at least a 40-Mbyte hard disk drive, a CD-ROM drive, a VGA color monitor, and a printer. The basic point here is that hardware requirements are minimal and readily available. In the case of the laser disk products, a laser disk drive and high resolution (VGA) monitor are also required. [Pg.105]

If you ve ever used a really fast disk drive, you know that the Commodore 1541 drive leaves something to be desired— namely, speed. True, it s much faster than a normal Datassette, but it s still annoyingly slow compared with other floppy disk drives with high-speed parallel interfaces. [Pg.256]

Almost every computer made today uses some type of disk drive to store data and programs until they are needed. You ll learn the exact details of how they work later in Chapter 4, Disk System Architecture. Most drives need some kind of connection to the motherboard for the computer to talk to the disk drive. These connections are known as drive interfaces and there are two main types floppy drive interfaces and hard disk interfaces. Floppy disk interfaces allow floppy disk drives to be connected to the motherboard and, similarly, hard disk interfaces do the same for hard disks. When you see them on the motherboard, these interfaces are said to be on board, as opposed to being on an expansion card, known as off board. The interfaces consist of circuitry and a port. Most motherboards produced today include both the floppy disk and hard disk interfaces on the motherboard. [Pg.69]

Phoenix Technologies Phoenix Technologies was the pioneer who developed BIOS in the first place. Their BIOS software supports user-defined hard drive types and 1.44MB floppy disk drives. [Pg.86]

The first type are called floppy drive power connectors because they are most commonly used to power floppy disk drives. This type of connector is smaller and flatter (as shown in Figure 2.28) than any of the other types of power connectors. These connectors are also called Berg connectors. [Pg.98]

The type of removable media drive that is the most often described is the floppy disk drive. It is called that because the original medium was flexible. IBM PC A series of personal computers based on the Intel 8088 processor, introduced by IBM in mid-1981.
