Hard disk drive components

In one of its final assembly factories, Maxtor Corporation offers a component-level product. Hard Disk Drive (HDD), to its customers for further assembly of desktop PCs, high-end servers, consumer electronics products, network attached storage (NAS) server appliances, etc. (see www.maxtor.com). Maxtor has partnership-based B2B relationships with its customers. In this setting, customer orders are not given as specific order quantities and order due dates. Instead, only the total order quantity in each week is specified with permitted minimum and maximum quantity limits. In its order promising and fulfillment processes, Maxtor does not postpone customer orders to later weeks (i.e. no backorders), but it may deny customer orders subject to liability and/or penalties. While customer orders are promised weekly, the order fulfillment process is executed daily to provide accurate resource utilization and production schedules (see Ali, et al. 1998). 

How much improvement might be expected from using the chassis of an enclosure for cooling This depends substantially on the enclosure construction and the location of the chassis screw with respect to the hot component. In one example, a device was cooled with a thermal screw that connected between a hard drive PCB and the hard drive enclosure. Connecting the device thermally to the hard disk drive resulted in a 10 percent thermal enhancement. 

Choose the custom choice and leave the default location. On the Selecting Features screen, you will be asked to not only decide which options you want, but also how you want them to be installed. In Figure 15.8, for instance, Microsoft Word Help is selected to run from CD, Wizards and Templates will not be installed, and Text with Layout Converter will be installed only if it is used. The Address Book and Page Border Art are the only optional Word components that will actually be written to the disk as part of this installation. These installation options are available because of the flexibility of the Windows Installer program, which actually stays on your hard drive and can start a small install any time you need it, as when someone wants to use the Text with Layout converter. Not all programs support these options yet, but many more will in the coming years. 

The physical components of a computer form the hardware. Hardware includes the disk and hard drives, clocks, memory units, and registers for arithmetic and logical operations. Programs and instructions for the computer, including the tapes and disks for their storage, represent the software. 

Since the control and monitoring system requires all of the layers to be operating correctly, system reliability is equal to that of the least reliable component— which often is the personal computer. Therefore, it is important to make sure that a networked system is configured with multiple PCs having duplicate functionality. A recommended plan is to have access to a spare monitor, and to maintain a daily backup of the system on a second hard drive or a high-density removable backup device (tape or disk).
