Handheld PCs

The other type of PDA is known as a Handheld PC (HPC). These are basically shrunken laptops. The HPCs run an operating system, known as Windows CE, from (whom else ) Microsoft. Windows CE is basically Windows 95 shrunken to fit into the limited RAM of the HPC. Instead of using a mouse to point to the icons and menus in Windows CE, the HPCs use a stylus on the touch-sensitive screen. 

Software to facilitate the use of handheld PCs in field studies has been developed in many institutions, more or less specific to certain studies. Flexible software systems suited to a variety of applicafions are still an exception (e.g. Behavior Observation System, Noldus Information Technology, AG Wageningen, NL MONITOR for various types of self-reports, developed for use with the PSION 3 series, Brugner, 1998 in-field performance testing, cf Buse Pawlik, 1996 Fahrenberg, Brugner, Foerster, Kappler, 1999).

Technical progress as well as investments in PEMFCs for transportation, stationary, portable, and micro fuel cell applications has been dramatic in recent years. The present view is ophmistic for fuel cell power generation the status is presently at the field trial level, or early commercialization stage, moving into volume commercialization. Although commercially viable, niche PEMFC applicahons exist today, the first commercial mass markets for fuel cells are expected to be for handheld electronic devices, PCs, and other portable devices. 

From the top, the client layer resides on an end user s desktop, laptop, or handheld device, which is typically, but not limited to, a Windows PC with a Web browser. Usually a Web-based client layer is called thin client, which is lightweight. The programs that run inside the browser are typically JavaScript, VB Script, Java Applets, ActiveX, or Web browser plug-in. Using a rich client such as. NET or Java Swing is another choice, although this book focuses on a Web-based architecture.

Both pH and ISE probes have always been small but have, historically, been attached to a pH meter that is often not so small. This has changed with the advent of handheld dataloggers and built-in LCD screens that allow the analyst to carry the pH or ISE probe to the sample, take the measurement and obtain a reading immediately. Java, software vendors are starting to provide solutions featuring thin client software or web browsers as their front end. FR versions usually use nonhalogenated, low-molecular-weight systems that provide dramatically increased flow to fill out complex geometries in thin walls. As would be expected, the heat distortion temperature values of these blends tend to be significantly lower than those of neat polycarbonate.
