One stud)P showed that a tretinoin concentration of 0.01% is effective for the face, hands and forearms, whereas another showed that there is no difference between placebo, 0.01% tretinoin and 0.001% tretinoin. A concentration between 0.05% and 0.1% is, on the other hand, always considered active. The average concentration used is 0.05%, but different skin types or sensitivities may require different concentrations, and it is recommended to start any treatment with a trial dose of 0.02% or 0.03%. [Pg.8]

They occur predominantly on chronically sun-exposed skin, such as the face and the dorsum of hands, and in fair-skinned individuals (especially Fitzpatrick s skin type 1 and 2) [2]. There is also a high prevalence among those receiving chronic immune suppression as organ ttansplant recipients [3]. AKs are intraepidermal skin tumors, and a risk factor for SCC development. Smit et al. (1994) followed 74 apprentice hairdressers and 111 apprentice nurses from the start of first occupational exposure until the end of their apprenticeship. The average IR of hand dermatitis was 32.8 cases/100 person-years in hairdressers and 14.5 cases/ 100 person-years in nurses. The relative risk of having a dry versus normal skin type was 7.3 in hairdressers and 1.7 in nurses. Apprentice nurses with a history of (atopic) mucosal symptoms had a 3.4-fold increased... [Pg.11]

Potassium biduoride crystals may break down to a fine white powder that is readily airborne. In this form, the salt is quite irritating to the nasal passages, eyes, and skin. Therefore, the hands and eyes should be protected and acid dust masks should be worn while handling, as an acid duoride KHF2 can cause superficial hydroduoric acid-type bums. Areas of skin that have been in contact with potassium biduoride should be washed as soon as possible with mildly alkaline soaps or borax-containing hand cleaners. If there has been contact with the eyes, they should be washed well with water and a physician should be consulted. [Pg.231]

It was fun to think about how I should dress, speak, move, and touch, to talk of type-foundries and colophons, watermarks and printers patrons, and all the time watch a mans hands, the tilt of his head, the way his mouth moved as he spoke, the way his fingers brushed mine as he put more drinks on the table. It was fun that could fill my head and then my body, that bright, dumb spark in a man s eye that made my skin shiver in response. And we were away from home, after all, it was only a week, and the sun was shining on the Venice canals, or the moon was rising from behind the Rockies, or the coal fire in my rooms was so glowing that it shut out the gray cold and the Lancashire rain, and wrapped us in warmth. [Pg.301]

At present, the information concerning alterations in vehicle composition on the skin surface is sparse. However, two possible extremes are conceivable. On the one hand, if the vehicle has a high vapor pressure, it often completely evaporates shortly after application. On the other hand, the vehicle may remain on the skin surface in an almost completely unchanged composition, (e.g., highly viscous Vaseline or similar thick covering systems). Between these two extremes lie the remaining types of vehicle. [Pg.476]

Pompholyx eczema is a special vesicular type of dermatitis affecting the hands and feet. It can be acute and persistent, characterised by many deep-seated, itchy, clear, tiny blisters. Later there may be scaling, fissures and thickening of the skin. Outbreaks usually last several weeks, and common sites include sides of the fingers, palms and, less often, on the soles. The aim of treatment is to prevent secondary infection and spontaneous resolution is expected within 2 or 3 weeks. If, however, it persists, it may be necessary to use short courses of corticosteroid creams. It is an inflammatory reaction and there is no underlying infective component. [Pg.160]

The most common type of OCD is an obsession with contamination that leads to compulsions for cleaning the environment and washing any areas of the body, like the hands or face, that might become contaminated. A person with this kind of OCD often has the compulsion to wash his or her hands over and over again, even if the skin becomes chapped, red, and bleeding. [Pg.34]

Acrylate types of monomers and oligomers are known to be skin and eye irritants. Even if they do not cause irritation immediately, they may sensitize a person over a longer exposure and cause allergy. On the other hand, they represent much less of a hazard than common solvents (see Table 10.1). [Pg.236]
